Minutes of the 2003 IADR-DMG Business Meeting Goteborg, SWEDEN 1. Call to order Dr. Dave Sarrett, President of the DMG, called the meeting to order at 5:05 pm on June 26, 2003, in Room A2 of the Svenska Mässen, Göteborg, Sweden. Approximately 50 members were in attendance.
2. Treasurer’s report On behalf of the current Treasurer, Dr. Jeff Thompson, Dr. Sarrett reported that the balance in the treasury, as of December 31, 2002, was $117,098.98.
3. Secretary’s reports Dr. Hiroshi Nakajima, Secretary, reported on the recent election results. Dr. Jeff Thompson, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Dr. Mark Hagge, University of the Pacific, San Francisco, were unanimously elected as President-elect and Treasurer, respectively. Two newsletters were published in this year in conjunction with DMGC-America. Dr. Nakajima thanked Dr. Tom Hilton for his tremendous contributions to compiling and publishing the newsletters for the last few years. Dr. Nakajima reported that the 2002 annual report was submitted to the IADR headquarters last November and was available on the DMG website. Dr. Nakajima called for candidates for the office of secretary of the DMG, whose term of office would begin in 2004.
4. Editor’s report Dr. Susanne Scherrer, Editor of the DMG, asked the members to update their e-mail addresses whenever their addresses change.
5. Appreciation to corporate sponsors of the DMG Dr. Sarrett expressed the group’s appreciation to the corporate sponsors, Kuraray, Ivoclar, GC America, Pentron, Kerr, Harry J. Bosworth, W.E. Mowrey and Nobel Biocare for their support of this year's DMG banquet.
1 6. Recognition of the Group Program Chairs (GPCs), Symposia Chairs and Lunch & Learning Chair Dr. Sarrett recognized the chairs of the group’s activities during 2003 IADR meeting. These chairs were: Abstract review and GPCs---Drs. Satoshi Imazato, Kevin Frazier, Chaiyi Shen, Martin Tyas, Jeffery Stansbury, Jim Bloome, Sharukh Khajotia and John Powers. Symposia Chairs---Drs. Dorin Ruse, Ann Marie Neme and Steve Rosenstiel Lunch & Learning---Dr. Maria Pintado
7. Program planning for the 2004 IADR Honolulu meeting Dr. Sarrett announced that Dr. Jeff Thompson will head the program planning for the 2004 IADR meeting in Honolulu. He asked the members to let Jeff know how they could help with abstract reviews, symposia organization and the Lunch & Learning session.
8. Wilmer Souder Award Dr. Sarrett and the members in attendance congratulated Dr. David C. Watts, University of Manchester, UK, the 2003 Wilmer Souder Award winner. The award was presented to Dr. Watts during the opening ceremony held on June 25.
9. A minute of silence The following DMG members have passed away since the last meeting: Drs. Harold Stanley, Robert Craig, George Dickson, Henry Koehler, and Takao Fusayama. A minute of silence was observed in remembrance of these deceased colleagues.
10. Feedback on the online abstract submission process Dr. Sarrett asked the members to offer any feedback they might have about the online abstract submission process so that he could present it at the GPC Lunch meeting held on June 28.
11. Presentations at the 2004 IADR/AADR Honolulu meeting Power Point presentations will be available for all oral presentations at the next IADR meeting to be held in Honolulu, March, 2004.
2 12. Journal of Dental Research Editor search Dr. Sarrett announced that the IADR is looking for an Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Dental Research.
13. Councilor’s report On behalf of Dr. John Powers, Councilor, Dr. Sarrett gave a summary of the IADR Councilor’s meeting held in Göteborg. Dr. Stephen Bayne (University of North Carolina, Dental Materials Group), Dr. Hector Lanfranchi (University of Buenos Aires, Experimental Pathology Group) and Dr. David Williams (University of London, Experimental Pathology Group) were nominated for IADR Vice President. The merger of the Journal of Dental Research and Critical Reviews in Oral Biology and Medicine was approved. Two reviews will be published in each issue of the JDR. All groups will now be represented at the IADR Council meetings rather than the current rotation system of voting group members and observing group members. The 2008 IADR meeting in Jerusalem has been postponed. The 2008 meeting is now scheduled for Toronto, and the 2009 meeting will be in Miami Beach.
14. Comments from members Dr. Sally Marshall urged the members to support the DMG candidates who are running for IADR or AADR offices. She noted that Dr. Stephen Bayne, DMG, is a candidate for IADR Vice-president, and Dr. Diane Rekow is running for AADR Vice-President. She emphasized the importance of sending DMG members to IADR/AADR committees to enhance the group’s activities. Dr. Ken Anusavice commented that the rejection rate of abstracts submitted from undeveloped countries was higher than that from developed countries due to poorly organized abstracts. He asked the members to volunteer to pre-review and refine abstracts submitted from undeveloped countries in order to increase the acceptance rate, so that our group could provide the researchers from such countries with more opportunities and experience at international meetings.
15. New business Dr. Ken Anusavice asked the members to consider submitting a proposal for a new award, the IADR/GlaxoSmithKline Innovation in Oral Care Award. The deadline for submission is October 31,
3 2003. Details about this award are available on the IADR Website.
16. Transfer of IADR-DMG Presidency The Presidency of the IADR-DMG was transferred, along with the gavel, to Dr. Agneta Oden from Dr. Dave Sarrett. Dr. Sarrett was acknowledged for his excellent contributions to the IADR-DMG. The meeting was adjourned at 5:35pm.
