Preparing for the ASVAB (AFCT) The Marine & Family Programs – Education Center does not endorse any particular method of test preparation beyond recommending that examinees review a core of courses such as mathematics, English, and science. Such academic preparation will help with performance on the Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Word Knowledge, and General Science subtests. Studying or taking technical courses will also help with performance on the Auto Information, Shop Information, Electronics Information, and Mechanical Comprehension subtests. Steps to Take In Advance of the Actual Test Day  Prepare well in advance of the day of the test.

 Know what to expect on test day.

 Familiarize yourself with the contents of the ASVAB (AFCT) subtests.

 Take sample questions and review content areas in which you need to freshen up your skills.

Strategies for Taking the ASVAB (AFCT)  Read the directions for the test carefully before you begin.  Read each question carefully before selecting your answer.  Pay attention to the time — don’t spend too much time on one individual question, if that means you won’t have time to answer later questions.  When you don’t know the answer to a question, try to rule out as many incorrect choices as you can, and then make an educated guess from the remaining answers.  Answer every question. If you run out of time, it is to your advantage to fill in random guesses for the remaining items, as there is no penalty for guessing. Prepare for the test

With the ASVAB diagnostic found in the Military Test Prep section of the DoD MWR Libraries web site, http://nelnetsolutions.com/dod, you can answer test-like questions, analyze your results, and evaluate your strengths and weaknesses. For each section, you'll be able to assess your results according to subject area, question difficulty level, and personal confidence level (how sure you were about your answer). Once you get a clearer picture of the areas that you need to study, you can prepare for the exam at the same web site. Additionally there is a free eBook, Mastering the ASVAB available via download. You can also take up to three practice exams on-line or download the test player to practice off-line. Peterson's Online Academic Skills Course (OASC), also found in DoD MWR Libraries, will create an individualized study plan for improving basic math and English skills.
