TIMELINE 1929 January 15: Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to Alberta and Michael (later Martin) Luther King. 1948 King received a bachelor's degree in sociology from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. 1951 King received a bachelor's degree from Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pennsylvania. 1953 Martin Luther King, Jr. married Coretta Scott in Marion, Alabama. They had four children together: Yolanda Denise (b. 1955), Martin Luther King III (b. 1957), Dexter (b. 1961), Bernice Albertine (b. 1963). 1954 King accepted his first pastorate—the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. 1955 King received a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Boston University. He was the first African American to receive the honor. 1965 King registered to vote at Hotel Albert in Selma, Alabama and is assaulted by James George Robinson. King led march for voting rights for African Americans in Selma, Alabama. 1968 King is assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee by James Earl Ray.
