SUMMER VENTURES IN SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS

Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics (SVSM) is a cost-free, state-funded program for academically talented students who may pursue careers based in science and mathematics. The program brings rising juniors and seniors together in residential settings for four weeks of intensive study.

A statewide program of the University of North Carolina system, SVSM is administered by The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. Six campuses of the university system host the SVSM institutes, each of which has its own director. The six campuses at which the programs are held are Appalachian State University, East Carolina University, North Carolina Central University, UNC-Charlotte, UNC-Wilmington, and Western Carolina University. Students live in dormitories under the supervision of qualified residential advisors who provide guidance and plan social, athletic, cultural and co-curricular activities.

SVSM supplements high school and university courses, taking students beyond the traditional boundaries of high school science and mathematics. Specifically, students learn experimental design, laboratory skills, instrumentation, mathematical modeling, strategies in mathematical problem solving, and exploratory data analysis. Moreover, the students learn these basics while engaged in specific scientific and mathematical topics of interest to them. They also learn about computer applications, careers in science and mathematics, social issues related to science, and communication skills for mathematics and science competitions.

Applications are due each year by January 31 and may be picked up in the Guidance Office. They are also available online at www.summerventures.org. Because a high school transcript and a confidential teacher rating form are part of the application, the high school counselor’s office must mail the complete application package.
