Dear Trinity

Members and Friends,

Peaceful greetings.

With the start of a new scholastic and program year, we also have some exciting new beginnings at Trinity. I am coordinating and leading two Bible studies and discussion opportunities – one on Sundays at 10:30 AM and the other on Thursdays at 9:00 AM. Both of these sessions will be using a DVD study and discussion format.

The Sunday sessions will begin with a 6-week look at “Discover Islam.” This award-winning series (Harvard Interfaith Film Festival 2011) has been distributed through our ELCA and will give us an opportunity to learn more about this faith tradition and compare it with our own Christian faith. There are over 1.5 billion world-wide followers of Islam, yet few people outside the faith truly understand Muslim beliefs, practices and values. There is great misinformation about issues ranging from Jihad to women’s rights. This series will followed-up with a 12-session discussion of the “History of the Bible: The Making of the New Testament” and another video series discussion of the “Dead Sea Scrolls.” More information about these last two sessions will be given in future newsletters.

The Thursday sessions will focus on the making, content and message of “The Old Testament” and “The New Testament.”

Other than the Islam series, the DVD videos are produced by a company called “The Great Courses” and are accompanied by very interesting, helpful and informative study guides. One of the great values of these DVD videos is the scholarly input by learned professors of Biblical studies from several nationally known Universities. Additionally, the video format provides great visuals of geographic locations and historical artifacts.

The Sunday sessions will begin on September 16th at 10:30 AM. The Thursday sessions begin on September 20th at 9:00 AM. The setting is relaxed and informally guided discussion and sharing. It is not necessary to have previous Bible knowledge; just an eager and inquisitive attitude. It is a great learning and sharing environment. You are welcome to invite your friends to come with you.

Joy & Peace, s/ Pr. Curtis Zieske Youth and Family Ministry

But while still in the summer season, I have to acknowledge a very special young lady, who is so very faithful and truly an asset to this congregation. That would be Cheyenne Severtsen, our ever faithful, reverent and lovely young woman who has been at just about every worship service this summer. She is always ready to be our Acolyte, Crucifer or both. This church is truly blessed to have her as part of our congregation. Our committee has been meeting and discussing many things this summer. We’ve talked about new banners, for different occasions, new things to be added to our church website and the worship service itself. Keep a look out for some of these things and let us know your thoughts. Nancy has also been incorporating your favorite hymns this summer, and that is always a plus. We continue to ask congregation members to share their talents, singing etc. with us, some say ‘Yes’ others say ‘ We’ll see’, but we keep asking. If you have things you would like to see happen at Trinity, let us know as we are open to positive suggestions.

Another fun event is scheduled for Sunday the 14th of Oct. and that is the “Musician Appreciation Coffee”, this year we thought we should have it down in Trinity Hall. This is the coffee where this committee honors our wonderful musicians, and we have homemade goodies and coffee. Come and say ‘Thanks’ to the great people who so enhance our worship service. Our next meeting is Tues. Sept.4th at 5:30PM, please join us. “Make a joyful noise to the Lord” Psalm 100.1 s/ Andrea Jensen, Chair Cheryl Enderson, Carla Johnson, Verlaine Williams, Worship & Music Committee

LIFE AND LEGACY This is a reminder for our upcoming workshop on Sunday Sept. 30th during the education hour, following service. Topics to be discussed that day include: Healthcare directives, Wills and Power of Attorney. This is an informational workshop, an overview of these topics to give people some perspective on them. It is geared to all ages, so please bring your parents, your young adults and yourselves. Come and listen and bring any suggestions for future workshops. We will be listening to you. There will be a meeting of this committee on Tues. Sept. 18th at 4:15 PM. If you are interested in joining, please come or contact one of the members. s/ Andrea Jensen Ron Petersen, Corky Stanley, Hello all, Fall is fast approaching and hopefully everyone has had the opportunity to enjoy our beautiful summer season. Along with fall, comes the finishing up of the projects we’ve put off before the white stuff starts to fly. Speaking of projects, the elevator service company has been here at Trinity to make temporary repairs to the elevator. Thank you to everyone for their patience during this process, and permanent repairs are on their way soon. We have discussed a fall clean up day at Trinity for sometime in October. We will be scheduling the final date in September, and will notify everyone then. We would appreciate volunteers during that day, to assist us in keeping our premises neat and orderly in appearance. Speaking of a neat and orderly appearance, Greg has been working hard to shampoo the interior carpets of the church. If you notice the clean carpets, take a few minutes to thank Greg for his hard work. As summer winds to a close and Labor Day fast approaches, enjoy this time with friends and family. Should you have any concerns or comments about our premises, please feel comfortable to contact me. Blessings to all, s/ Brian Wacholz (507)-383-5465 Premises Committee

TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH WOMEN Bev Jackson Cotter and Erna Berthelsen “She opens her hand to the poor, and reaches out her hands to the needy.” Proverbs 31:20 “She opens her hand to the poor…” and in that hand is a quilt made with donated fabric, donated thread, donated labor and donated love. Since 1948 women who love to sew have been meeting in Trinity Hall on the second Wednesday of each month. With sewing machines and enthusiasm they have stitched together thousands (in 2005 the count was 15,000) of quilts that have been given to Lutheran World relief, the Red Cross and the Salvation Army. Immediately following World War II, women gathered in the home of Mrs. J.P. Jensen to repair used clothing to donate to the war victims and refugees in Europe and Asia. Two years later the group moved to Trinity Hall and began quilting. It has remained there, dwindling in numbers but as enthusiastic as ever. If you would like to join the quilters, call Joan Mattick 373-1582, Donna Sonnek 373-7818 or just stop in. Your time and talent will help to warm a victim of disaster somewhere in the world. Speaking of our history, in 2012 Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America are celebrating 25 years of this organization. Erna Berthelsen was a delegate to the Milwaukee conference that established the ELCA, continuing a tradition of caring and sharing among Lutheran women that dates back to 1837 when the first women’s missionary society was formed in New York. 25 years is a major milestone. It’s exciting to be a part of this heritage. We want to wish a special Thank You to Jo Meyer and Pastor Zieske for sharing your insights with the July and August Bible Study groups and for helping to make these gatherings special. Another Thanks goes to Ione Varenhorst for organizing the Undies Sundays. Currently Trinity is the only church in town that provides this service to the community, donating new underwear for grade school children through the Salvation Army. DATES TO REMEMBER: Wed.
