Careers in Agriculture

Careers in Agriculture 4-H Poster Contest

Who can participate? All youth ages 5-18 - (as of January 1, 2017)

Four Age Divisions: *5 – 8 *9 – 10 *11 – 13 *14 – 18

When? Posters are due to N. C. Cooperative Extension, Henderson County Center, in Jackson Park, by Friday, October 6, before 5:00 p.m.

Why? To investigate and learn more about a career in agriculture that interests you!

How? 1. Poster must describe and show how a career relates to the agricultural industry.* See the back of this sheet for some examples of agricultural careers. There are many others to choose from. 2. Research the career, and write down important facts and figures. 3. Use standard poster board (22” x 28”) and original artwork. Do not use cartoon or movie characters. These are copyrighted materials. 4. Design your poster using brief, factual information and correct spelling. 5. Keep it simple and to the point. Think of your poster as a “billboard” to “advertise” this career field. 6. Please do not attach “3-D” decorations of any kind! Any paper attached to the poster must be glued down securely and not extend over the edges of the poster. 7. Complete the contest entry form on the back of this sheet and tape it on the back of your poster. Do NOT put your name on the FRONT of the poster.

Poster tips from the judges:  Sketch out your design on regular paper first.

 Make the subject (title/name of career) obvious with BIG letters. Incorporate the title into the design.

 Capture the viewer’s interest with a featured picture.

 Put facts into your own words.

 Use dark permanent marker or ink instead of light for all lettering. This will make the poster easier to read.

Winning Posters: will be displayed at WNC Fall Harvest Days (Oct. 19 – 21) and at the NC Cooperative Extension, Henderson County Center after the judging period. Youth ages 5-8 will not compete, but will each receive participation recognition.

Prizes: Every entry will receive a participation ribbon. County winners: in each of the 9-18 age divisions will receive a cash award: 1st place - $20, 2nd place - $15 and 3rd place - $10).

*What is an agricultural career? In addition to farming and ranching, today’s agriculture offers over 200 rewarding and challenging careers in diverse fields such as: Agribusiness Management, Parks and Tourism, Agriscience, Forestry, Food Science, Resource Development and Management, Fisheries and Wildlife and more!
