Primary Function / Purpose: The Bicycle Program Coordinator at Northern Arizona University would be responsible for promoting transportation on campus, primarily bicycle usage, to reduce drive-alone commute trips in an effort to improve access to and mobility through campus, reduce vehicular congestion, and improve/maintain student safety.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Program Information Development: Develop informational materials to promote bicycle use. Develop promotional activities and events to encourage bicycle use. Develop facilities acquisition and maintenance options. Develop departmental incentive programs to encourage bike commuting. Develop creative solutions to specific bicycle needs.
Serve as campus advocate for cycling: Conduct surveys to ascertain cyclists and non-cyclists reactions to or opinions about cycling conditions on the campus. Coordinate activities and program development with and serve as liaison to various groups which play a role in bicycle use on campus. Coordinate activities/programs development with and serve as liaison to municipal, county, regional, state and federal government, local merchants, and relevant environmental organizations. Serve as an advocate for the development of campus programs, facilities, etc. that support the increased use of bicycles.
Develop and implement a program to effectively manage and enforce rules related to bicycle parking. Work with University Police to establish an effective enforcement program related to moving and parked bicycles.
Educational Outreach with classes and programs: Develop informational materials, programs and classes to educate the campus community relative to bicycle safety. Compile and maintain records of bike accident statistics with data obtained from Public Safety and others. Serve as liaison to Public Safety to improve bicycle traffic enforcement programs. Incorporate effective cycling techniques into bike safety educational efforts. Organize events such as bike to work month, week, day with a bike safety focus. Organize commute promotions to encourage safe riding best practices. Collaborate with campus departments on promotions, campaigns, classes that support and encourage bike safety.
Circulation Development: Assist in the development and maintenance standards/specifications manual for campus bicycle facilities including bike paths, lanes, signs, signals, pavement markings, lighting, parking facilities etc. Recommend/monitor changes in campus bicycle facility improvements. Track and interpret bicycle utilization data for use in planning and development decisions. Develop proposals for current and projected bicycle facility improvements. Identify campus access point improvements/changes.
Support, improve, and increase campus-wide bicycle registration program
Administrative Tasks: Maintain registration supplies. Train and monitor staff employees. Establish, maintain and monitor accurate and timely bike registration data entry procedures. Develop programs to increase compliance with campus bicycle registration requirements. Develop, coordinate and oversee annual orientation week bike registration drive. Develop and maintain elements of campus bicycle security
Public Safety Liaison for Bike Safety: Serve as liaison with Public Safety and other relevant law enforcement agencies to develop bike theft prevention and recovery programs. Develop educational materials to enhance bicycle security. Maintain files on Public Safety bike theft/recovery statistics. Promote bicycle registration as an effective tool in reducing theft and increasing recoveries. Coordinate the acquisition of effective bicycle racks and related security devices.
Infrastructure Development: Monitor utilization of bicycle support facilities such as bike racks, clothes lockers, showers, and secure bicycle storage facilities. Work with other NAU departments to implement additional bicycle building projects. Help develop implementation plans for new bicycle programs, such as community and fleet bicycles. Provide day-to-day operational supervision of new bicycle programs, which may be developed in the future. Monitor bicycle support activities of organizations outside Stanford University, identify opportunities for cooperation, and participate in joint efforts. Maintain regional bike map and mapping resources.
Bicycle Advocacy: Maintain and expand current In-depth knowledge of bicycles and bicycling including safe cycling practices, bicycle security measures, bicycle related legislation, bicycle registration procedures, bicycle facilities, and promotion of bicycling as an alternative form of transportation.
New Student Orientation Logistics: Manage and organize logistics and planning for new student orientation events and ongoing annual events that promote the services of the department to include alternative transportation programs (bicycling, walking, transit etc.).
Stipend and Other Benefits: Full Time The stipend and education award amounts are listed below: Full-time (40 hrs/week—1700 hrs total) Gross Stipend Amount for Term = $12,978; Educational award = $5,645 Eligible for health coverage & Eligible for day care
Qualifications: Required: Background in Environmental Sustainability and Stewardship. Extensive knowledge of bicycle repair, maintenance, and rider safety. Traditional and outdoor classroom instruction skills and experience. Willingness to promote a safe working and learning environment Ability to lift 50 pounds Preferred: Confident speaking in front of large groups. Ability to lead diverse groups of people. Completion of LNT Master/or Trainer Background in bicycle advocacy
Training / Development Opportunities: The AmeriCorps member will receive a new employee orientation to the department. This orientation will include training on program offerings, policy and procedure, responsibilities, and job duties.
In addition to basic workplace training, the AmeriCorps member will have opportunities to participate in training courses such as Introduction to Bike Maintenance, Advanced Bike Maintenance, Intro to Mountain Biking, Leave No Trace Trainer, Challenge Course Facilitator, and other technical skill courses through Outdoor Adventures www.nau.edu/outdoors. The AmeriCorps member will also have the opportunity to participate in trainings offered through the Office of Sustainability such as NAU's Energy Mentor Program. The member will also work with the NAU PD on bicycle safety initiatives and help create further training programs. On a more regular basis, the AmeriCorps member will gain work experience by participating in regular staff meetings and trainings.
Work Environment: This position will require working occasional evening and weekend hours. Volunteers must meet Campus Recreation Services safety/security sensitive qualifications. In addition to AmeriCorps employment requirements, misdemeanor charges are reviewed on a case by case basis by NAU Human Resources.
