Review of accidents since Nov. 13, 2013 meeting Marilyn reported that there were only two accidents since the Dec. 13, 2014 meeting and neither was recordable. One incident occurred on January 13 and involved a stomach muscle strain that occurred while mopping. This claim was denied. The other incident involved an individual who had a minor injury after being struck in the head by an object.

A student at the Highland’s College was cut by equipment and required stiches. This was a recorded accident but was not considered to be part of Montana Tech’s work-comp claims because the accident involved a student.

Old/Unfinished Business/Updates: Review of accident/incident rates for 2103. Marilyn presented a summary of the accident/incidents that occurred on campus during 2013. There were a total of 10 recordable incidents resulting in 17 lost days from work and 67 days of restrictions. The incident rate for 2013 was 2.24 which is much lower the 2012 rate of 4.13. Bev asked what a “good” Incident rate would be and Marilyn stated that she will bring comparative material to the next meeting. It was noted that for many of the professionals on campus, the number ‘40’ used in number of hours worked per week may be low and thus the incident rate may actually be lower.

New Business: Review/discussion of the safety manual for the new machine shop in ELC A discussion was held on the safety concerns associated with the new machine shop that will be located in the ELC. Concerns ranged from the need for First Aid/CPR training for all students using the shop, the need to have adequate phone service in the lab, to the need to have a supervisor present all time the shop is open. Additional concerns addressed egress routes and access to the cage area of the shop. It was agreed that Marilyn and Jeanne would draft a letter expressing the concerns of the Safety Committee and send it to Committee members prior to sending the letter to the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellors

GHS Labeling Jeanne asked if there was some way to avoid labeling each individual container under the new GHS but was told that under the law Mt Tech will need to do the individual labeling. The time frame for completion of the labeling is 2015.

In case of Emergency App Discussion of the ‘In case of Emergency App’ was postponed until the March Safety Committee meeting

Bureau of Mines Safety Concerns Todd Myse presented safety concerns of Bureau of Mines employees. The two primary concerns are the safety of employees walking to work via Granite Street and the cleanliness of the building. There is a need for a sidewalk on the portion of Granite between the Foundation Building and the NRB. Additionally there may be a need to alert motorists as they go around the curve near that NRB that there are pedestrians in the area. The cleanliness issues are primarily concerning the bathrooms.

Lighting of the parking lot west of campus and the walkway directly east of the NRB were brought up. An update on lighting will be presented at the March meeting.

March 13 Safety Conference Announcement Marilyn reminded the committee of the Safety Conference being held in Billings on March 13. Roger stated that since other Mt Tech employees are attending the conference there will be an opportunity to car pool.

Meeting adjourned at 10:50 Respectfully submitted, Jeanne Larson
