1. Candidate: an individual running for political office

2. Nomination: Naming those who will seek office

3. Five Ways to Make a Nomination: - self-announcement: personally nominate yourself - caucus: meeting where people nominate candidates - conventions: delegates nominate an individual to office - primary: intra-party election of a candidate - petition: nomination by voters’ signatures

4. Primary elections: an election where registered voters elect a candidate that will run in a future election. All states used some form of primary election to select Presidential candidates. - closed primary: only declared party members can vote - open primary: any qualified voter can vote, no matter which political party they belong to - run-off primary: when no majority is obtained in a primary election

5. Non-partisan Election: elections in which candidates are not identified with political parties

6. General Elections: elections in which final selections of office holders are made

7. Candidates receive money from several groups/individuals to finance their campaign. 1. small contributions 2. wealthy individuals and families 3. themselves 4. Political Action Committees: (PAC) non- party private groups organized to elect government officials in order to promote the groups interests. PAC’s play a major part in giving money to candidates in hopes for legislation to be passed in their favor. 5. fundraisers 6. subsidies: money from state/federal treasury - Democratic and Republican nominees automatically qualify to use money from this fund - minority parties can qualify for this money if….they obtained 5% of the popular vote in the last election…..or……if they win 5% of the popular vote in this election (money is given to them after the election) 7. Soft Money: non regulated money for campaigns (examples: money for “party- building activities”, candidate recruitment, voter registration, etc…..soft money offers a loophole in the system!!!!!) Hard Money: campaign money that is regulated

8. Campaign: an organized effort by candidates to persuade individuals or groups of people to vote a certain way

9. Delegate: an individual that represents the interests of a larger group. Delegates are often sent to conventions.

10. Voter Registration: you register to vote so that you will be able to vote in upcoming elections. Where you register to vote is based on where you live. Voter registration prevents fraud during elections. There are 49 states that require voter registration to vote. North Dakota is the only state that does require voter registration.

11. Three Universal Requirements to vote in the US 1. Citizenship 2. Residence 3. Age 12. Other requirements (past and present!!) 1. Registered 2. Literacy (no longer a requirement) 3. Poll Tax (banned by the 24th amendment) ** #1 reason why people don’t vote…….APATHY!!!!!

13. Polling Place: a place where voters cast their vote

14. Exit Poll: a survey taken after you have voted to ask for whom you voted in the election. These are often used to predict the results before the official results are tallied. (used most often by the media!!!)

15. Precinct: the smallest political division. precincts are formed to organize small groups of voters. people from the same precinct will vote at the same polling place.

16. ballot: voters cast their votes on ballots. there are several types of ballots used during elections.

17. Recall Election: voters can remove an official from office.
