A. Reason for Nomination: Bob in 1973 was injured in a construction accident, and is now a paraplegic. Despite his handicap, he has constructed a camp for youth, family and groups to enjoy and be inspired. Each year he seems to have a big project on his list. This year it is an enclosed horse arena. In years past he has built a chapel, etc. Most of everything he has built has come through donations, both physical and monetary. He also holds an annual wheelchair camp, where people from around the world attend. His next big project is to build a 27 room log lodge (handicap accessible). Over 20,000 people a year utilize these facilities.

B. Describe the project/solution/innovation/application:

Here’s a single example. About 5 years ago, Bob had a vision of building a chapel. Not any chapel, a chapel built from logs. He was searching for timbers that would meet his needs and ran into numerous roadblocks. One day he received a lead that the state park just 50 miles away would be cutting down a stand of white pines – just what he needed. He went there and asked how much – it was immediately apparent they wanted too much. So he decided to go up another notch in the bureaucracy. Here he told the person that God wanted him to have those timbers to build his chapel (interestingly, a WWII POW camp was located here, and German POWs planted these trees). Bob paid the state just $1 per tree. But he had to get them hauled, stripped, etc. Bob simply rounded up people that would haul the trees for free, labor to strip the trees, etc. Not surprisingly, almost every major feat has a story, which is an inspiration to all.

C. Describe any recognition the nominee’s work has received, such as awards, media articles, mention in a book, or other publicity (for the mailed “hard copy”, please attach any additional pages, reference to a website, or enclose a video tape)

Bob completed his 100th marathon in the fall of 2002. He has authored the book, “the Marathons of Life.” Bob is also a motivational speaker.

D. Describe who has benefited, directly/and/or indirectly from the nominee’s innovation/application:

Children, families, groups and those with handicaps have utilized his facilities to find comfort, inspiration and the grace of God.

E. How does this innovation/application affect the five “Life Priorities” of Spirituality, Wellness, Relationships, Intellectual, and Financial?

Ironwood Springs over the years has been an ambitious project, helping build lives, communities and pride. Bob is a big thinker that somehow seems to get things done. No small task for a non-profit. And once you’ve attended this place, one can only be amazed at what has been accomplished, and how people that have enjoyed these facilities have grown in each of their life priorities.
