Women and their role in the society

The role of women in modern society rises because of the ongoing changes in social, political and economic spheres. These changes are accompanied by breaking of stereotypes. For example, women have obtained the freedom of choice and now they are not obliged to marry till the age of twenty-five. However, we still have many problems connected with the status of women in the society. If we try to compare the position of women in Ukrainian and American society, we will see that women are in different situation. In the USA the problem of discrimination of women is urgent. This problem caused such social movement as feminism. The main aim of feminists is to make men and women equal not only in their rights but in all life spheres, which is hardly possible. As a result of such “equalization” men are losing their masculinity and women are losing their feminity. I think, this is a great psychological problem of western society. In Ukraine the situation is not so dramatic. Women have the opportunity to choose the job they like. Naturally, gender stereotypes exist but they are not very rigid. To my mind, the more important problem of women in our society lies in combining of career and family. Most of women want to realize themselves in some field, but at the same time they want to be good mothers and wives. Some women manage with this difficult task, but some choose either career or family and this chose can be painful. Another women’s problem in our society is that many young women migrate abroad to find some high-paid job, but in fact become enslaved by men. Sale of human beings is a highly profitable business. Women can be compelled to sweatshop labor, forced marriage, prostitution and other humiliating activities. Traffickers use coercive tactics such as deception, fraud, isolation, threat to control their victims. Certainly, this practice is illegal and must be eliminated. Women can be chronically abused by men in their families. Domestic violence is the result of persistent restraints of women’s equality and sexual autonomy. In order to protect women from violence in home governments must enact laws that punish offenders and compensate victims. In my view, it is essential to explain children the role of men and women in the society and the importance of feminine qualities. It is also necessary to teach people to respect both men and women, because they can’t exist without each other. When women begin to struggle for their rights, they become too masculine. I think, women simply need freedom and opportunity to develop their own natural features.
