Graduate Council Meeting Regent’s Room 3:00 P.M. August 17, 2012

Minutes

Invited Guests: Mary C. Hardin, Dorian Voorhees

Members Present: Chair, Meg Lota Brown, Robert Torres, Timothy Secomb, Lois Loescher, Carl Maes, Richard Vaillancourt, Amy Fatzinger, Tom Kennedy, Kelley Merriam-Castro, Andrew Carnie, Dianne Horgan

Members Not Present/Excused: Maria Teresa Velez, Diep Nguyen, Lori Boyd, Betul Czerkawski, Ivy Pike, Marcela Vasquez-Leon, Koen Visscher, Denise Roe, William Epstein, John Brobeck, John Williams, Jerel Slaughter, Rose Ylimaki, Eliane Rubinstein-Avila.

Call to Order and Roll Call. The meeting was called to order by Chair Brown at 3:09 p.m. A member sign‐in sheet was passed.

Approval of Minutes. The April minutes were unanimously approved.

Introduction of Members. Chair, Meg Lota Brown, introduced Dr. Andrew Carnie as Dean of the Graduate College.

Dean’s Report. Dean Carnie informed the council that he did not have anything to report since his appointment date of August 13, 2012.

Chair’s Report. Chair Brown addressed the committee identifying the role and structure of the Graduate Council.

GPSC Report. Member Nguyen was not present. No report was provided.

Action Items. Mary C. Hardin, Associate Dean, College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture Dr. Hardin attended the meeting to request an academic name change from the existing College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture to College of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture. Dr. Hardin justified her request: the Planning program is now back at the College and therefore, asked that it be included in the name. Chair Brown asked the council to vote, the council moved to approve, all were in favor.

Information Items. Associate Dean, Dianne Horgan A. Admissions Update: admissions are up a little, are on target and enrollment looks good. i. There was discussion about ERE. B. GradPath: New paperless degree audit process; pilot in effect. October is estimated start for campus users. Training sessions will be announced. “Milestones” will be integrated into GradPath. C. Survey of Earned Doctorates: the NSF/NIH Survey of Earned Doctorates institution profile report indicates that ~97% of UA students completed the 2010 survey. Survey results show that UA students’ time to degree is longer than most and debt is higher. Additional information can be found on the Graduate College website: Faculty/Staff Data tab. D. VersatilePhD: http://grad.arizona.edu/versatilephd/: this is a highly rated website for students to find non-academic jobs. The site provides information related to webinars, job postings, advice, etc. An announcement of VersatilePhD was sent to all UA DGS and to GPSC.

Discussion Items A. Grad Council: Chair, Meg Lota Brown Chair Brown provided the Structure and Plan for the Year: Graduate Council provides a forum for matters of concern and works with the Graduate College to accomplish goals according to the mission of the University. Chair Brown also explained that President Hart has asked for a strategic plan and that Graduate Council can participate by providing information to Dean Carnie. Chair Brown proposed to constitute four (4) committees that will meet during the fall semester and will culminate prior to the winter break. Committees and recommended Chairs:

Completion/TTD – Associate Dean, Dianne Horgan Finance/Student Debt- Assistant Dean, Dorian Voorhees Diversity- Associate Dean, Maria Teresa Velez GAT/Workload/Compensation-Chair, Meg Lota Brown, co-chaired by Julie Treanor

Council members were in agreement of the proposal and a sign-up sheet was passed. Members not in attendance will be approached by email. Committees should be formed by September 10, 2012. Confirmation and further details will be provided by email prior to the next council meeting. B. (C.) Data Needs: Associate Dean, Dianne Horgan An announcement was sent campus-wide last month by then Dean, Andrew Comrie, to introduce a new unit (unnamed) in the Graduate College that will focus on graduate data, analytics and research. Members of the new unit were chosen for their expertise: Dianne Horgan, Tom Rhodes and Teresa Embry.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:30 p.m. The next meeting of the Graduate Council is September 21, 2012.
