Caution about barley loose smut and powdery mildew control in 2015:

1). Every year loose smut can be an issue if seed is not treated with smuticide. High infection rate can be translated to high yield lose. Also some countries have adopted zero tolerance on export grains. Barley varieties such as Hindmarsh and La Throbe are more prone to loose smut than some other new barley varieties. To prevent further build-up of the disease in 2015, it is worth treating the barley seeds with products containing actives such as Penflufen, Difenoconazole + Metalaxyl-M + Sedaxane and Fluquinconazole combine with Tebuconazole which were shown to be very effective reducing the infection levels trials conducted by DAFWA in 2013.

2). In powdery mildew prone areas, especially southern region of WA, barley seed should be only treated with Fluquinconazole based products for longer protection against powdery mildew together with suitable smuticide to smuts control.
