Research Support: Ongoing Research Support Worksite-based lifestyle program for reducing diabetes and cardiovascular risk in India Total Grant Funds: $3,084,525 Institutions/Organizations: NIH/NIDDK Dates: November 2015 – present Role: Co-Investigator Goals: In an implementation trial at 8 worksites in India, to evaluate the success of worksite- based implementation of a diabetes prevention/management program; the effectiveness of the program in terms of improving cardiometabolic risk factors; and the return of investment of the intervention for employers.
Georgia Diabetes Translation Research Center (GDTRC) Total Grant Funds: $1,853,405 Institutions/Organizations: NIH/NIDDK Role: Co-Investigator Goals: To accelerate the conduct and use of diabetes translation research in the Southeast through: promoting awareness and demand; supporting junior faculty; providing expert guidance through three translation research cores (Design and Evaluation; Engagement and Behavior Change; and Disparities); providing tools (e.g., open-access resource library) and opportunities (e.g., pilot and micro grants) for researchers; and hosting online and in-person platforms to engage with GDTRC.
Completed Research Support (past 5 year) Assessing the Impacts of Implementing Diabetes Prevention and Hypertension Control Globally Total Grant Funds: $238,678 Institutions/Organizations: Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation Dates: May 2013 – December 2015 Role: Co-Investigator Goals: To develop and validate an efficacy-to- effectiveness conversion tool, apply it to the literature in two test cases (diabetes prevention and hypertension control) and then estimate the realistic avoidable burdens of disease and mortality worldwide. A Culturally Tailored Lifestyle Intervention to Prevent Diabetes in South Asians: A Pilot Study Total Grant Funds: $232,500 Institutions/Organizations: NIH/NIDDKD Role: Co-Investigator, Project Director Dates: April 2009 – May 2012 Goals: To develop, implement, and evaluate a culturally appropriate lifestyle intervention for the prevention of diabetes in the South Asian community. The outcomes of this project could be used to plan larger interventions to prevent diabetes in South Asians, a rapidly growing segment of the US population.
A Translation Randomized Trial of a Culturally Specific Lifestyle Intervention for Diabetes Prevention in India Total Grant Funds: $399, 564 Institutions/Organizations: The International Diabetes Federation Role: Co-Investigator, Project Director Dates: May 2008 – December 2012 Goals: To evaluate the effectiveness, cost–effectiveness, and sustainability of a culturally specific lifestyle intervention in Chennai, India based on the curriculum developed for the Diabetes Prevention Program, plus metformin when needed.
Pending Research Support Influence of Families On Modification of Diabetes Risk Total Grant Funds: $3,729,230 Institutions/Organizations: NIH Role: Co-Investigator Goals: To quantify pre- and post-diagnosis behavior changes in adults receiving new diabetes diagnoses themselves and how these relate to behaviors and risk in non-spousal household members of different generations (e.g., older or younger); assess, based on population data, whether self-motivated pre- and post-diagnosis behavior changes in non-spousal household members are associated with lower prediabetes and diabetes incidence and how much; and develop and evaluate a household-level intervention to enhance management of diabetes and improve prevention in other household members, compared to individual-focused, usual diabetes care. Long-term Evaluation of Quality Improvement Strategies in Diabetes Total Grant Funds: $3,121,762 Institutions/Organizations: NIH Role: Co-Investigator Goals: To evaluate the long-term affects, acceptability, and cost-effectiveness of an on-going multicomponent (non-physician care coordinators plus decision support software) diabetes management program in India (The Center for Cardio-metabolic Risk Reduction in South Asia [CARRS] Trial)
