Criterion 1: Programme Mission, Objectives and Outcomes

Standard 1.1: The program must have documented measurable objectives that support departmental and institute mission statements.

1.1. About IM|Sciences The Institute of Management Sciences, based in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is a young, innovative, and enterprising business school en route to compete with the foremost management schools of the country. The Institute is dedicated to its unique approach of providing management education based in cutting-edge research and comprehensive training. Unlike conventional academic institutes, IM|Sciences broadens its educational focus in response to new trends in the developing field of management. Based on the social values of integrity, honesty, professional excellence and a broad vision of life, the Institute aims to provide an educational experience that transforms its students into business leaders at par with international managers, executives, and entrepreneurs. Since its inception in 1995, the school’s academic rigor and avant- garde approach to management education have produced alumnae that shape the world of business at regionally, nationally, and internationally.

1.2. IM|Sciences Mission Statement The Institute’s comprehensive mission is to establish a self-conscious, learned, and self- regulating society in which individuals recognize their roles as accountable to the public good. More specifically, the Institute aims to provide advanced knowledge of the art and science of business and information technology through teaching, research, and training in order to produce leading executives, managers, software engineers as well as computer scientists that can venture to shape the practice of business in every industry and become a catalyst for social and economic development. The Institute’s all-encompassing mission is to attest to the world the fact that a relatively underprivileged region has the potential to reach beyond social, political, and security barriers to educate and produce outstanding leaders for tomorrow.

1.3 The MBA 3.5 Years Programme Mission Statement The masters in business administration programme is a 3.5 year rigorous programme in which different aspects of management are explored in depth with emphasis on the application and practices of theoretical knowledge. This programme is a professional-dais for those who would accept the challenges of an ever changing world, preparing them with the necessary decision making skills. This programme aims at bringing out the best abilities, qualities and polishing them wherever needed in a conducive environment.

The masters in business administration programme mission is to equip young minds with skills, knowledge and edge to excel in the dynamic market place of today’s business.

1.4. The MBA Programme Educational Objectives The MBA programme aims at developing a student's intellectual ability, analytical thinking and managerial skills through an appropriate blend of theory and practice. The programme assists the student in understanding and developing the unique leadership qualities required for the ever changing and dynamic business environment. SECTION 2: CURRICULUM DESIGN AND ORGANIZATION

2.1 DEGREE TITLE MASTERS OF BUSINESS ADMININSTRATON (MBA)

2.2: Definition of Credit Unit An academic semester represents 16 weeks of classes, exclusive of three monthly exams and one comprehensive exam.

2.3: Degree Plan MBA 3.5 year programme is comprised of seven semesters. Students have to appear in 3 monthly examinations during the semester and one comprehensive exam at the end of semester.

2.4 ASSESMENT OF THE MBA CURRICULUM

Standard 2-1: The curriculum must be consistent and supports the program’s documented objectives. The curriculum supports the programme objectives and is consistent with the market dynamism. The graduates of the programme are specialized in Finance, Marketing and Human Resource Management.

Standard 2-2 Theory Problem and Solution Design The programme core material is design in a very scientific manner and assures that the graduates are equipped with its theoretical and practical aspects. Standard 2-3: Mathematics and Basic Sciences Requirements The MBA programme offers courses in mathematics that support the programme core courses. These courses are designed in a way to facilitate the student in their major areas. The mathematical courses are mainly comprised of Basic and Advanced Mathematics and Statistics like Business Mathematics, Quantitative Techniques in Management, Business Statistics and Inferential Statistics. These courses fulfill the HEC requirements.

Standard 2-4: Major Requirements as Specified by the HEC The students with 14 years of education will be required to complete 66 credit hours of business courses and earn a BBS degree (2 years) before they could become eligible for admission to

Page | 7 MBA programme (1.5 years). A minimum of 60 semester credit hours are required to complete this program (BBS). A thesis worth 6 credit hours is optional; a student can choose to study two courses (each 3 credit hours) or can opt to work on thesis/project of six credit hours. A BBS degree holder will be eligible for admission to MBA or MS programme. The following courses are recommended for the BBS degree by HEC.

Page | 8 After completing the BBS program, the students can either continue courses for another 1.5 years (36 semester credit hours) to earn a degree of MBA (three semesters) or they can leave the program with a 2 years degree of BBS. The MBA program aims at developing a student's intellectual ability, executive personality and managerial skills through an appropriate blending of business and general education. Students are required to complete course work of at least 30 credit hours in addition to 6 credit hours of project/report/thesis or two elective courses.

Standard 2-5: Humanities, Social Sciences, Arts, Ethical, Professional and others The programme includes courses in social sciences and humanities like Principles of Economics, Business Law, Logic & Critical Thinking, and Business Ethics.

Standard 2-6: Information Technology Contents So far, the institute has no Information technology content in the MBA program. However, we have planned to include IT courses in future sessions of the program under consideration.

Standard 2-7: Business Communication Communication skills are the top most elements for the best presentation of a business school graduate. Business Communication is offered in the MBA programme in this regard. Along with the courses, we have developed a friendly and interactive environment in order to polish the communication skills of the students.

Page | 9 SECTION 3: LABORATORIES AND COMPUTING FACILITIES.

3.1: Introduction The MBA programme is facilitated by the IT-Section in availability of computers labs. There are eight computer labs in total. Out of these, four labs (each of which have at least 30 computers) are used for lectures and the other four labs (with more than 80 computers each) are used by student for their research and assignments. Two labs are located on each floor of the Institute. Along with this the students have access to computer facilities in the library as well. Students also have access to HEC digital library and can download new research articles from the registered websites like JSTOR, which is paid by the Institute. Registered software for advance research like SPSS, STATA, Gretel and EViews are taught in the programme and the softwares are available to students in the computers labs.

Standard 3-1: Lab Manuals/Documentation/instructing. Instructions about the usage of computers are distributed among students and the faculty. Standard 3-2: Adequate personal support for labs Adequate personnel support is available all labs. There is only one lab assistant in each lab that takes care of the computers and facilitates teachers and students when required. Standard 3-3: Adequate Computing Infrastructure and Facilities. All faculty members and student have access to the modern technology of computing. Multimedia facilities are available in each class and computer lab for lectures and presentation. Apart from lab access, computers along with Internet connectivity are provided to faculty members for their offices. Video conferencing facility is available in the Institute through which students of the various programmes are able to attend conferences, lectures and workshops at international and national universities and organizations.

Page | 10 SECTION 4: STUDENT SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE 4.1: Introduction Our main aim is to produce the best graduate, who will be the best representative of the Institute. Along with the taught courses, the other focus is on the development of personality traits and vision of the students. The student counselling is considered as an important responsibility in this regard. Our faculty dedicates extra time for students counselling and to help them in various problems regarding their education, career and social life. 4.2: Courses Standard 4-1: Sufficient Frequency of Course Offering The programme successfully delivers all the required major and elective courses within the stipulated time. Core All MBA core courses are offered every term per year. These core courses are offered almost every semester spread over the duration of this degree. Elective courses Elective courses are offered once the core subjects are taught in MBA Program. These electives include Human Resource (HR), Marketing and Finance.

4.2: STRUCTURE OF COURSES Standard 4.2.1: Effective Faculty/Student Interaction Courses are designed keeping in mind the effective and application aspects. The Student/teacher interaction is the main theme of these courses. The following principles are observed to ensure the creative and productive output. ● Each class is made of 45 students at most.

● 75% attendance during the semester in each subject is mandatory.

● At least 2.0 CGPA must be maintained by the students to retain their position in the programme

● Students have to submit assignments and presentations in time.

● Typically a MBA course includes three monthly exams and one comprehensive exam Page | 11 ● Faculty distributes outlines in the beginning of the semester and devotes their office hours for student counselling.

4.3: Guidance to Students Standard 4-3: Professional Advising and Counselling The selection of best career and area of specialization according to the intellectual and learning abilities is an important decision for the students. The committed faculty makes sure their availability and provides the best advice and counselling in this regard. Students are provided up- to-date knowledge about the market demands. 4.3.1 Student counselling system A career development centre has been developed for students counselling so that they make the best possible decision about their career. Apart from career counselling, the programme coordinator resolves conflicts among students or with the faculty. In severe cases the parents are also informed and requested for a visit to the Institute.

4.3.2 Opportunities for the Students The MBA programme is committed to excellence and ensures to get the best out of the students. A group of students are provided opportunities to visit USA for one semester under the culture exchange programme each year. The students actively participate in various activities. They organize and participate in annual parties, sports gala, winter and spring festivals. The programme sponsors them to visit other national universities in order to compete in academic and non-academic competitions.

Standard 5.1 5.2 Programme admission criteria, policies regarding programme / credit transfer The process of admission to MBA is carried out on an annual basis, which is duly approved by the Academic Committee of the Institute. This process is reviewed and evaluated annually in meetings of the semester committee and coordinators’ committee meetings chaired by the Director of the Institute. In such meetings, the processes of forthcoming admissions are evaluated step-by-step.

These steps include the number of students to be admitted, review and approval of advertisement for admission and proposed time and dates for admission etc.

The students are admitted to the programme on the basis of the following criteria:

1. The prospective candidate must have 14 years of education.

2. The candidate must qualify entrance / admission test arranged by the institute in coordination with testing-authority.

3. The candidate must qualify the interview for admission.

4. Must complete other conditions that Institute may deem necessary at the time of admission. The candidates desirous of getting admission in MBA should hold a bachelor’s degree equivalent qualification and having at least second division, securing 45% marks in aggregate.

Qualifying admission test and interview separately are compulsory. A candidate securing less than 40% marks in the test or interview stands disqualified for admission.

Students admitted to the programme are exposed to the most basic and relevant courses in the first semester such as introduction to business, basic accounting, Principles of Marketing,

Page | 13 management and economics. These courses are fundamental in nature and form the basis for courses in further semesters.

The performance of students is evaluated through a continuous testing process spread over entire period of studies/ semester. Students must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.2 during the course of their academic programme. Students with GPA/CGPA less than 2.0 are dropped from the rolls of the institute forthwith. Students securing a GPA/CGPA between 2.0 and 2.2 remain on probation for one semester. 5.2.1 Transfer from outside the university Admission to MBA of the institute through migration from any other institute/ university is not allowed.

5.2.2 Transfer to the programme from other programmes A student is not allowed to transfer from one degree programme to another programme.

5.2.3 Transfer to the programme from another major A student is not allowed to transfer from one degree programme to another programme. However, groups of students are combined to facilitate smooth conduct of a course in more than one degree programme including elective courses.

5.3 Process of registration The registration process ensures enrolment of all active students. Registration is conducted at the start of a programme usually in the first semester and in some cases, second semester depending upon the response from a respective board/ institution necessary in the verification of documents issued by such institutions. Student course load A regular student is required to take twelve credit hours per regular semester, however, a student can take a maximum of 15 credit hours.

Page | 14 5.4 Recruiting process The recruitment process starts with the receipt of application & CV of the candidate followed by a demonstration. A demo is a presentation wherein a candidate presents a topic in the area of his degree specialization before a panel of subject experts who are usually faculty members and selected programme-coordinators. Presentation is followed by a question answer session. If the panel recommends a candidate, he/she may be initially engaged on visiting-basis for a semester for one or two courses at the most. During a semester two student-evaluations take place. At a required level of evaluation score, visiting status of a faculty remains for two semesters.

In the first place, a person is appointed on one-year contract taking into consideration his qualification and experience. Based on satisfactory performance, the contract is renewable for further one year. After the evaluation of a candidate’s two years’ performance by selection board he/she is recommended for permanent absorption in the cadre in which he/she was originally appointed.

5.4.2 Faculty evaluation Faculty evaluation refers to feedback from students regarding faculty members’ teaching assessment. A teacher’s performance in the following areas, for example is assessed: Ability to create interest, command over subject, communicative ability, capacity to inspire student, coming down to students level, punctuality etc. evaluation from students takes place twice every semester; once at the middle stage and second at the end of a semester. Once tabulation and calculation process completes, results of evaluation in the form of statistical measures such arithmetic mean, mode, median, standard deviation, question rated lowest and question rated highest by students are communicated to the faculty member that serves as feedback tool and helps them bring necessary correction in teaching methodologies if so required.

5.5 Teaching and delivery of course material Evaluation and process control takes place at regular intervals in order to achieve excellence in teaching and learning. The coordinating units put resilient importance on employing modern resources for teaching, such as multimedia, audio-visual facilities, computers in order to enhance Page | 15 the quality of course delivery.

Processes, methods and procedures, well approved from relevant forums, are used to ensure that teaching and delivery of course are effective and focus at student learning are conducted through implementing measures and responsibilities, well addressed in TORs of concerned persons.

a. Coordinator’s role A programme coordinator is, in general, engaged in the following academic activities:

● Prepares teaching assignments and course schedules for all batches.

● While preparing course schedules, ensures workload of faculty members in terms of minimum credit-hour teaching.

● Keeps liaison with semester committee and other academic forums.

● Monitors & ensures smooth conduct of classes, content coverage and teaching quality.

b. Curriculum and course syllabus An Office assistant distributes a copy of the detailed course outline well approved from concerned body to students that contains the course title, code, prerequisite or co-requisite if any, topic and subtopic of the course and recommended books and other material.

c. Attendance Every student of the institute is required to maintain at least 75% of the attendance. A student who fails to meet the minimum requirements of attendance in any course is not allowed to sit for the exam in that course(s).

d. Evaluation and grading The performance of a student is evaluated through a continuous testing procedure spread over the entire period of studies/semester. Besides the semester’s final examination, which carries forty percent marks, hourly examination are administered every month and thus the student are required to appear in three such examination for each course in a semester. The two best scores are counted towards the final grade.

MBA is one of the major programmes of the Institute of Management Sciences, Peshawar. Currently, more than 223 students are enrolled in this programme. Specializations offered in this programme are: Finance, HRM and Marketing. Highly qualified faculty members work with this programme i.e. most of them are either MS or PhD degree holders. Amongst them, 35 are permanent faculty members of IM|Sciences whereas the other 15 are visiting members of the faculty. Faculty Development The institute is committed to provide a competitive work environment to its faculty. The coordinator of the MBA programme remains in contact with faculty in order to have a better communication among students, faculty and administration. Many faculty members avail the opportunity to attend seminars, trainings and workshop to enhance their capabilities. Along with the teaching responsibility, the faculty has an excellent contribution in scholarly activities. Each faculty member supervises at least six students in their research projects. They allocate proper timings for the meetings and guide the students in their specialized areas. It has ultimately increased the research publications. The institute regularly organizes workshops for the faculty to improve their research skills. Page | 19 Faculty Motivation

The institute bears all the expenses of the faculty for the academic research activities beside the incentives for promotion to the next cadre. It includes the publication charges. Along with this they receive a reward of 10000 rupees for publication in Y-Category Journals and 25000 rupees for X or W category journals. The institute facilitates and motivates its employees to attend the research conferences for their paper presentations. The institute partially bears the expenses. All the faculty members have the health insurance, insured by the institute.

Page | 20 Criterion 7: Institutional Facilities

Standard 7-1: The institution must have the infrastructure to support new trends in learning such as e-learning. To support the e-learning the institution has a well equipped video conference room (video-con) and computer labs.

● Video-con is used for online workshops, lectures and coverage of co-curricular activities e.g. debates competition held at HEC etc. Video-con is also used for online interviews of students for the grant of scholarships or student loans through HEC.

● A total of six computer labs with a total of 225 computers that are connected to internet and digital library are at present fully functional. Among the available six one lab is a general lab with a total of 49 computers connected to internet. This lab is primarily used by students to do their assignments and access the digital library; no classes take place in the general lab. The lab remains open from 08:30am till 08:15pm without a break.

Standard 7-2:The library must possess an up-to-date technical collection relevant to the programme and must be adequately staffed with professional personnel.

● The institutions library is well equipped with all the modern facilities of learning that caters to the needs of the students on campus. The library is divided into two main sections;

a. Reference section that includes the books, journals and subscribed magazines. Students and faculty cannot issue the books, journals and magazines from this section however they can photocopy and scan the reference material.

b. The second section of the library facilitates the issuance of books. Students can issue books for a period of two weeks by using their Page | 21 library cards.

● 02 library assistants (one male and one female) having Masters In Library Information Science (MLS) along with 02 library attended (both male) having Bachelors In Library Information Sciences are full time available in the library for students and faculty assistance.

● The institute’s library uses Library Manager (software) that was purchased from India and updated according to the needs of the institute by the library assistant.

● Digital library provides an online access to books, journals and scholarly magazines that can easily be downloaded. For this purpose 15 computers are placed in the library. Digital library can be accessed from the faculty offices, labs and hostels (male & female).

● For maximum facilitation of students and faculty the library remains open from 08:30am till 08:15pm on working days.

Standard 7-3:Class-rooms must be adequately equipped and offices must be adequate to enable faculty to carry out their responsibilities.

● All the class rooms are equipped with computers and multimedia. The wi-fi facility helps the faculty to access internet inside the class rooms.

● Faculty rooms have desktop, internet and digital library facility. Furthermore faculty members are provided with a facility of purchasing laptops by paying instalments that are deducted from their salaries.

● To check plagiarism of students assignments faculty have their own turnitin (software) accounts.

Standard 8-1: Support and Financial Resources The support and resources offered by Institute of Management Sciences to attract and retain high quality faculty are multidimensional. Some factors that contribute to the recruitment and retention of high quality faculty are summarized below:
