I. Objective: This is an introductory course to real estate law. You will be exposed to a very broad range of statutory, jurisprudential and regulatory source material covering both common law and civilian concepts. A rudimentary knowledge of geometry will be helpful, but not required. The learning objectives are:
(1) To learn the basic elements of ownership of property including timber and minerals. (2) To learn the process whereby real estate is acquired, financed and disposed of. (3) To learn the fundamentals of the process and workings of a typical clerk of courts office insofar as real estate is concerned.
Examinations
There will be three tests given during the quarter, consisting of multiple-choice and true/false questions, with each test counting as 25% of each respective student’s final grade. No make-up exams will be administered. In the event a student misses a scheduled test, he or she will have the option of having the subsequent test count twice in the calculation of the final grade. Any student who misses two (2) scheduled tests will automatically fail the course. Any student who misses the third scheduled test will receive a zero (0%) as the grade for that test.
Tentatively there will be one weekly quiz given over each chapter covered. I reserve the right not to give a quiz, to drop a quiz grade, to make the quiz a take-home assignment, or to otherwise modify or alter the manner in which each respective quiz will be graded, taken and/or administered. The points for each quiz will be added together to form one (1) test grade to count as 25% of each student’s respective final grade. There will be no make-up quizzes administered.
Grading
The grading scale is the 100 point method as follows: 100–90% = A; 89-80% = B; 70-79% = C; 69-60% = D; 59-50% = F.
