2 Head of Fundraising Recruitment 2016

INTRODUCTION

The River & Rowing Museum is an award-winning museum and gallery, idyllically located on the banks of the River Thames in Henley, South Oxfordshire, close to the M4, M40 and within easy reach of Oxford and Reading by both road and rail.

Put simply, our mission is to bring the river, rowing, history and the arts to life, sharing our passion with as many people as possible. Accordingly, we need to maximise income and develop a sound funding base in order to achieve our goal.

The Head of Fundraising is a new and crucial position within the Museum’s Senior Management team. You will be responsible for generating fundraising income in support of the Museum’s work, including the expansion of our education work with young people and the continued enhancement of our galleries and collections. Working closely with the Director, other key staff and Trustees, the successful candidate is expected to provide strategic direction and leadership for fundraising whilst also acting as the public face of fundraising at the Museum.

We are looking to appoint an excellent communicator who is persuasive, outgoing and energetic. The successful candidate will have experience of developing strong, personal relationships and will either have a track record of fundraising or will have successfully worked in an income generation role (for example, perhaps in sales, wealth management or recruitment).

The post-holder will be supported by a Development Assistant (to be appointed).

Background

Conceived and founded by the Henley-based businessman and philanthropist Sir Martin Arbib and his family and opened in 1998 by H.M. The Queen, the Museum has established itself as one of the leading independent museums in the country. It was selected by The Times (May 2013) as one of the ‘50 best Museums in the world’, and in 2016 has been identified as one of the top 10 Family Friendly Museums in the U.K.

The Museum is recognised as crucial to the local tourist economy and attracts over 110,000 visitors a year.

The Museum’s award-winning building was the first major UK commission by Sir David Chipperfield and continues to be acclaimed for its minimalist design. Its permanent galleries cover rowing, the history of Henley on Thames, the story of the River Thames and the children’s book Wind in the Willows. In December 2016, thanks to a crowdfunding campaign and a major donation, a new permanent gallery devoted to the work of artist John Piper will open. The

3 diverse temporary exhibition programme in 2017 includes Henri Matisse, The Clangers and the BFG!

Education is central to the Museum’s charitable objectives and its success in both formal school workshops and informal learning is a source of pride. Each year over 20,000 young people visit our purpose-built education centre that was doubled in size in 2006 with the support of a major Heritage Lottery Fund grant. In 2013 the Museum was awarded the prestigious Sandford Award for Heritage Education.

The Museum is currently open seven days a week, throughout the year and sits in Mill Meadows by the side of the River Thames. It has a high quality and popular café plus a number of event spaces including a glass fronted room with river views (120 seated or 200 standing) and a gallery (180 seated or 300 standing).

The River & Rowing Museum Foundation is a registered charity. It is governed by a Board of Trustees who delegate day to day responsibility to the Director and staff.

The Steering Group of senior managers are responsible for all areas of our work and include Collections & Exhibitions, Museum Operations, Finance, Learning and Marketing & Communications will be joined by the new Head of Fundraising. The Steering group meet regularly with the Director to consider all areas of the Museum’s activities.

A team of volunteers also support the museum and there are ambitions to enhance the involvement of volunteers in the future. The post-holder will contribute to the development of this initiative.

Funding

As an independent museum, RRM receives no regular public funding apart from an annual grant from Henley Town Council of £10k.

Operating expenses are met through three main sources: donations from individuals and trusts and foundations along with corporate sponsorship; commercial income, including charged admission, café profits, venue hire and the shop and interest received from the Museum’s endowment fund.

The Museum operates a successful ‘Patron’ level giving programme (known as the Henley 100), has a significant corporate sponsorship with Invesco Perpetual and has benefitted from donations from a variety of other friends, trusts and foundations and companies. The Museum has an established American Fundraising arm and the postholder will consider the development of this activity.

We are now looking to develop a more strategic approach to fundraising in order to help us fulfil our plans for the Museum and to provide a more sustainable and resilient future for the organisation.
