Preparing for Final Orf 467 NJ PRT 04 Project s1

Orf 467 NJ aTaxi’12 v2 Objective:  To specify the location of an aTaxi “network” of “road-side” or “just-off- road” aTaxiStands (locations where aTaxis wait for users and deliver users) such that most trips can be conveniently served by autonomousTaxis (aTaxis) serving these locations. o By “most trips” we will mean greater than 90% of a typical week day’s trips throughout New Jersey that are longer than 0.5 miles. (Trips 0.5 miles or shorter will be assumed to be served by walking or bicycling.) o By “conveniently served” we will mean that both the origin and the destination of a trip that is “conveniently served” are each within no more than a ¼ mile “Manhattan-walk” from an aTaxiStand. This will be implemented by centering on each aTaxiStand a “0.5 mile on a side square pixel” oriented in a longitude-latitude coordinate system. For a trip to be deemed “conveniently served” both its origin and its destination must each lie within at least one of these “pixels”. o Initially, trips that are conveniently served will be assigned to travel by walking to and from the nearest aTaxiStands and traveling via an aTaxi between that pair of aTaxiStands. An improvement that we might be able to get to is one in which the utility of traveling between every feasible pair of aTaxiStands will be evaluated with the choice of departing and arriving aTaxiStand is chosen as the one with the minimum disutility; where a feasible aTaxiStand is any aTaxiStand that contains the trip Origin or Destination within its “pixel” o For Trips Originating or Termination in New York or Philadelphia, and having the opposite end of the trip within a “pixel”, it will be assumed that these trips will use conventional mass transit trips in combination with aTaxi. So… . for trips to/from Philadelphia, then the aTaxi system will take them from/to the center of their origin pixel to/from the Trenton Train Station. will be the job of your PRT system. Thus, you’ll need to . for trips to/from NYC, then the aTaxi system will take them from/to the center of their origin pixel to/from the nearest bus Park&Ride or NJ Transit Rail Station. The existing commuter bus Park&Ride, light rail (Hudson, River Line and Newark “subway”) or heavy rail (commuter trains, including PATH, the Lindenwold Line and the Dinky) transit systems will continue to operate and will each have an aTaxiStand. . For trips to/from the other out-of-state areas, we will locate a new Park&Ride facility next to a conveniently located aTaxiStand on the New Jersey border. o o Review what was done last year to synthesize a file containing the demographics of every trip made in New Jersey on a typical day. SynthesizingIndividualTravelDemandInNJ This is MOST Important o Review what was done for PRT by Orf467F10:NJPRTF10, Orf467F09 (final, Summary), Orf467F08, Orf467F07, Orf467F05 and Orf 467F04 for your counties. Your write-up about your counties should should be better than the best parts of the above. . Prepare very brief summary description of your counties that refers to these previous reports and other sources, and become familiar with your housing, school, commercial and employment data (Be prepared to discuss what you have on Wednesday Nov 16) Process:  For now: o Lay out an initial Pixel Grid for your Counties. Estimate the total number of pixels that you need to fully cover your county o Begin to remove some of the “pixels” o Consider building an algorithm that “covers 90%” of your county with a “minimum” number of pixels.  More later
