FDR and the New Deal – Children’s Book SSUSH18 The student will describe Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal as a response to the depression and compare the ways governmental programs aided those in need. a. Describe the creation of the Tennessee Valley Authority as a works program and as an effort to control the environment. b. Explain the Wagner Act and the rise of industrial unionism. c. Explain the passage of the Social Security Act as a part of the second New Deal. d. Identify Eleanor Roosevelt as a symbol of social progress and women’s activism. e. Identify the political challenges to Roosevelt’s domestic and international leadership; include the role of Huey Long, the “court packing bill,” and the Neutrality Act.

Directions: Either alone or in pairs, it will be your job to create a children’s book explaining FDR’s “New Deal” and the subsequent opposition to it. You will not only be graded on the content of your book, but also the creativity and artistic ability of your book. Use photos from online if you choose or you can draw your own artwork. Make it easy enough for a 7 or 8 year old to understand! Please divide your book into four separate chapters and please reference each term or concept included: Introduction: (Optional) – Describe the character of FDR. Who was he? When was he born? Where was he from? What did he believe about government’s responsibility to the people? Chapter One: “The First New Deal” – Briefly explain the Great Depression, Roosevelt’s election in 1932, his “First 100 Days” in office, the importance of his fireside chats and the reasons for the creation of the Tennessee Valley Authority. Chapter Two: “Opposition to the New Deal” – (A) Introduce Huey Long and explain his opposition to Roosevelt’s New Deal policies. (B) Explain Roosevelt’s desire to “pack the Supreme Court” and the reaction to this proposal. Chapter Three: “The Second New Deal” – (A) Describe the purpose of establishing Social Security. (B) Explain the effects of the Wagner Act, including collective bargaining, restrictions placed on employers, the establishment of a minimum wage and the impact on union membership. Chapter Four: “The Effects of the New Deal” – impact of women including Eleanor Roosevelt (her role as a symbol of social progress and women’s activism), the expanded role of the FEDERAL government and the increasing power of the President. I expect each book to be no less than 12 full pages (3 pages per chapter). DO NOT copy sentences directly from the book. PUT THE STORY IN YOUR OWN WORDS! A rough draft of your book must be approved by the instructor before work can begin on the final draft. I will not give credit to any group that does not first get rough draft approval.
