CLASS & LABORATORY HOURS: The class meets for 245 minutes per week. Lecture and Lab are built into your class meeting time. Extra hours will be needed to complete your homework assignments. Expect 6-10 hours of home- work per week. (A general rule of thumb for college classes is 2-3 hours per week for each course unit. This is a 3 unit class.) Your work may be done at home, or you can use one of the CIS Department open labs.

CLASS RULES 1. Arrive on time and do not leave early 2. Turn off all pagers and cell phones 3. Come to class prepared to take notes 4. Do not fall asleep in class 5. Do not schedule other activities for class time 6. Avoid any display of intimidation, harassment, or threatening behavior 7. Research first….then ask questions 8. Take responsibility for your own learning For more information, see the Sierra College Students Rights and Responsibilities Handbook at: http://www.sierracollege.edu/_files/resources/admissions/documents/Student-RR-2014-v2.pdf

STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

CIS50 Syllabus -1- Spring 2016 - Elson  Construct projects efficiently generating solutions using various workplace computer programs and shortcuts  Create and organize various types of files using multiple workplace computer programs  Formulate expressions and construct logic comparisons using proper symbols and syntax in workplace computer programs PARTICIPATION: Hands-on work will be completed during lecture period, and points will be given for participation in these classroom activities. Past experience has shown that attendance is directly related to your success in the class - in other words, come to class if you want to pass! For your best interest, you may be dropped from the course if you miss the equivalent of two weeks (4 class sessions for classes that meet 2 times per week). (See college catalog for details). If it is necessary for you to leave class early, please inform your instructor before class begins and sit near an exit to avoid disrupting the class. Without prior notification – leaving in the middle of class will result in loss of your participation points for that day. You are encouraged to obtain the phone number of a fellow classmate so that in the event of an absence, you can obtain class notes, changes in assignments, test date information, etc., from that student.

ETHICS: You are expected and required to do own work. You may discuss assignments and problems encountered with fellow students. In fact, studying the "concepts" together is a good idea. However, copying all or parts of homework assignments is expressly forbidden. Penalties for violation of this will be severe and may include expulsion from class, lab, or the college. At the very least, all involved parties will receive 0 points for the homework/assignment in question.

HOMEWORK AND ASSIGNMENTS: Each week – you may be working on any or all of the following: Chapter reading, MyItLab Grader Projects, end-of-chapter questions, MyItLab Skill-Based trainings, and/or special projects/exercises assigned by your instructor. Successful completion of this course involves a commitment on your part to spend adequate time (either in the lab or at home) to become comfortable with the software and to complete the assignments. Completion time for homework may vary depending on the assignment. Assignments must be completed by the due date for full credit. Projected due dates for assignments are listed on the Course Schedule and next to each assignment in the MyItLab weekly folders. All completed files are to be submitted to MyItLab by 11:59pm on the due date; and hard copy printouts (if required) placed on the instructor’s desk BEFORE class starts on the next class day following the due date. Late work is NOT accepted on most assignments. If late work is accepted (at the discretion of the instructor) – a 25% penalty is deducted from your score for each day that assignment is late. Always check the due dates listed next to the assignment name in MyItLab. If you are not finished with one of your assignments by the due date, turn in what you have completed. You will receive some points for the partially completed work. You will have one (for evening classes) and 2 (for day classes) “missed class passes” that can be used any time during the first 14 weeks of the semester for missed participation points. Other than the passes - NO CLASSES CAN BE MADE UP – NO EXCEPTIONS. Please bring your USB disk to class with you at all times. Disks may be collected by instructor for examination at any time.

CIS50 Syllabus -3- Spring 2016 - Elson EXAMS AND QUIZZES: There will be a total of three exams, each covering one or two of the software modules. Unannounced quizzes may be given throughout the semester. Exams and quizzes may include multiple choice, true/false, short essay questions, and take-home or hands-on questions. You are responsible for knowing material covered in lectures, textbook reading assignments, MyItLab Skills lessons, handouts, and hands-on classroom activities. Make-up exams are available only for prior excused absences and documented emergencies. Make-ups must be completed within one week following the regular exam and will NOT be given prior to the exam. QUIZZES CANNOT BE MADE UP.
