Social Studies Department World History WORLD HISTORY This course will cover the history of the world from the Renaissance to modern times. We will study the Renaissance and Reformation, The Age of Discovery, The Enlightenment and Revolutions of the 18th and 19th centuries, Life in the Industrial Age, the World Wars and Revolutions of the early 20th century and the world since 1945.

REQUIRED TEXTBOOK: o Book: Prentice Hall’s World History: The Modern Era ISBN 0-13-129975-1 o Supplies: College ruled spiral notebook for taking notes each day in class, pens or pencils and highlighters, post-it notes and a folder for keeping tests, quizzes and worksheets.

COURSE OBJECTIVES  The student will better understand the short and long term causes and effects of modern history’s most important events.  The student will better understand their role in the global community and see their place in this interconnected world.  The student will be able to detect patterns in world events, learn from things that have happened before and analyze consequences of ignoring lessons that should have been learned from history.

GRADING POLICY  ASSIGNMENTS (HOMEWORK/CLASSWORK) = 60% of the Term Grade  ASSESSMENTS (UNIT & CHAPTER TESTS, AND QUIZZES) = 30% of the Term Grade  PARTICIPATION/COURTESY/CONDUCT = 10% of the Term Grade o Students not bringing the textbook and necessary materials to every class meeting will lose PARTICIPATION points for that day. o All students are expected to participate in the discussions and on the topic of the day. This means being prepared for the subject matter that will be taught that day.  FINAL EXAM = 20% of the Semester Grade STUDENT WORK ETHIC: All work represents your education and reflects your character. Therefore: 1. Unless otherwise noted, all assignments are to be written on “College-Ruled” note- book paper. in pen (blue or black ink only). Or the homework may be printed (black ink) from a computer on white paper using a font similar to Times Roman or Arial in 12 point font only. a) All work is required to have a proper heading consisting of the student’s name (first and last), date, and assignment title b) For study purposes, all answers should be in complete sentences with some exceptions. c) 10% deducted from each assignment not in conformity with any part of these instructions. 2. All homework assignments are to be handed in when instructed, if not, homework will be counted late even if turned in at the end of that class period. 3. Students will be assigned seats; they must be in their assigned seats when the bell sounds or they will be counted tardy 4. If a student is absent due to a school sponsored event (game, field trip or play prac- tice, etc…), it is their responsibility to find out what information and assignments were missed. a) They may ask the instructor, refer to the Concordia website, or ask a fellow student. b) If an absence is a planned one, such as a game or other school related event, the student is required to get the assignment prior to the day of ab- sence and turn in the following day. c) An assignment due on the day of the event must be turned in to the in- structor on the date due, prior to leaving school. If not assignment will be counted as late. o LATE WORK—EXCUSED ABSENCE a) Late work will be accepted from students with excused absences within one week of their return to class. b) It is the absent student’s responsibility to get all missed assignments from their teacher before or after class, or from the internet www.concordiahigh.org o LATE WORK—UNEXCUSED ABSENCE a) Late classwork or homework due to unexcused absences or negligence will be accepted at the discretion of the teacher.

CLASSROOM STANDARDS  Students are expected to be on time, and properly equipped for learning.  All students are expected to exhibit “common courtesy” when they interact with one another in the class (Please read the “Parent/Student Handbook” distributed to all students).
