Midvale Alliance on Prevention

MINUTES:
Odds and Ends Marlo shared an experience on accidentally overdosing on prescription heart medication. The doctor failed to ask if the medication this person already had was the same dosage as what the doctor was about to prescribe.
Bret Hiner at Executive Director at Lighthouse Recovery Center is joining us. He heard about MAP through doing research on community involvement opportunities.
Update on Task Forces: About 150 people came to the Town Hall meeting. People love free food. AND are interested in hearing about prescription drug problems in Midvale.
YOUTH – The first meeting was not well attended. Biggest focus is education and giving kids alternatives to drug use. Next month’s meeting (Monday, May 17th) will discuss existing resources and how they can utilize what is already out there. SHARP survey results may be hard for Hillcrest to get. Clyde Mason is the man who can release the data. Billy may be able to help. Peer Leadership tean, Latinos In Action, and Midvale Youth Ambassadors Valley Journal (Sara Stevens) is interested in doing a follow-up article. They may be willing to post meeting dates.
ADULT- Olga and Mauricio will co-chair this Task Force People were concerned about the issue of sharing as well as misuse and abuse. Education is key. The Adult meeting will be scheduled the last week of April (Possibly May 26th 5:00pm @ 7583 S Main – de la Cruz and Assoc).
SENIOR – Father Diaz already held this month’s meeting. Discussed ideas brought up at the Town Hall as well as possible interventions o Stealing from Seniors. Locking up prescriptions. o Contraindications o Keeping a log for all persons assisting seniors with medications. o Larae Brown from the Union Community Council o Putting Flyers or educational materials on the Health/Medication aisle of the grocery store. Next Meeting: April 23rd at St. Therese Church at 5:00pm
PROVIDER- Sherri Vance has fallen ill and would like to pass on her chair responsibilities.
REMEMBER: All interventions must be evidence-based
Take Back Event at Hillcrest High School April 24th, 2010 Flyer needs to be translated into Spanish. Karina may be able to help. Please distribute these flyers around the community. Volunteers: Mayor Seghini, Sue Malone, Karina Perez o Ask – Key Club, Latinos in Action Press Coverage: o Send Olga the Town Hall press release and she will send to Spanish Media Outlets o The Mayor will get a press release done by her office (Paige)
