Q What help will I get?

A Your tutor will help you when completing the OCR assignment and will make sure that you know what resources/facilities you need and are allowed to use.

Q What if I don’t understand something?

A It is your responsibility to read the assignment carefully and make sure you understand what you need to do and what you should hand in. If you are not sure, check with your tutor.

Q Can I copy other people’s work?

A No. The work that you produce must be your own work and you may be asked to sign a declaration to say that the work is your own. You should never copy the work of other candidates or allow others to copy your work. Any information that you use from other sources, e.g. books, newspapers, professional journals, the Internet, must be clearly identified and not presented as your own work.

Q Can I work in a group?

A Yes. However, if you work in a group at any stage you must still produce work that shows your individual contribution.

Q How should I present my work?

A You can present your work in a variety of ways, eg hand-written, word-processed, on video. However, what you choose should be appropriate to the task(s). For some work, e.g. presentations, coaching sessions, role-play, work experience, you will need to provide proof that you completed the task(s). A witness statement or observation sheet could be used for this. If you are unsure, check with your tutor.

Q When I have finished, what do I need to hand in?

A You need to hand in the work that you have completed for each task. Do not include any draft work or handouts unless these are asked for. When you hand in your work make sure that it is labelled, titled and in the correct order for assessing.

Q How will my work be assessed?

A Your work will be marked by an assessor in your centre. The assessor will mark the work using the assessment objectives and the grade descriptors in the qualification specification.

Unit 5 – Physiology and Anatomy for Health and Social Care 2 OCR Level 3 Cambridge Technicals in Health and Social Care

Scenario

Everybody Breathes – Everybody Eats

Health and Fitness Exhibition.

We all know that if we don’t eat or don’t breathe we will not survive. But what exactly is going on inside our body that make these processes so important to maintaining life. Come along to the exhibition and discover the structure and function of not only the cells and tissues involved, but how they form organs and body systems that have to interact to ensure that the body can provide the conditions necessary for thought, movement, growth and development. These systems could so easily spin out of control with disastrous results to our health, so come along and explore the homeostatic mechanisms that ensure stability of conditions within the body.

Following the exhibition there will be an exercise class with a difference! Your instructor will test your fitness levels and help you to understand what is happening in your body during exertion and why.

To be held at The Taunton Academy on 3rd February 2013

Places are limited, so what are you waiting for? Book today!

You are to prepare for the exhibition by producing posters, displays, booklets and handouts and by carrying out a fitness check on an individual. Remember that those attending will be non- specialists so you will need to ensure that you explain everything clearly.

Tasks

Task 1: Cells

Assessment Criteria P1

The first task you have been asked to produce for the exhibition is an annotated poster to display at the exhibition, covering:

 Cell membrane

 Nucleus

 Chromosomes

 Cytoplasm

 Mitochondria

 Endoplasmic reticulum,

 Ribosomes,

 Golgi apparatus,

 Lysosome

Your annotations need to outline the main function of each component.

The evidence for this will be:

 An annotated poster that outlines the functions of the main cell components. (P1)

Task 2: Structure and function of tissues

Assessment Criterion P2

You have now been asked to produce a written report outlining the main tissues types and the function of each.

Tissues: the basic structure and function of:

 epithelial: squamous, ciliated, goblet cells

 Blood: red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets

 Cartilage and bone

 Areolar tissue

 Adipose tissue

 Striated muscle

 Sensory motor neurons

The evidence for this task will be:

 A written report outline the structure of the main tissues of the body (P2)

Task 3: Body systems

Assessment Criterion P3

You have now been asked to prepare a series of diagrams for a display explaining how the body works. Produce annotated diagrams that provide a detailed outline of all the main body systems and their general function.

 The gross structure of body systems:

o Cardiovascular – heart, arteries, veins, capillaries

o Respiratory

o Digestive

o Renal

o Nervous –central nervous system and peripheral nerves

o Endocrine –thyroid, pituitary, pancreas, adrenals, testes/ovaries

o Reproductive – both genders

o Musculoskeletal – a named joint, antagonistic muscles around a named joint

o Section through a bone

o Skin

 Main functions of systems: Overall function of each system shown above plus those of the lymphatic and immune systems

Unit 5 – Physiology and Anatomy for Health and Social Care 6 OCR Level 3 Cambridge Technicals in Health and Social Care

The evidence for this task will be:

 A series of diagrams that outline the gross structure of all main body systems (P3)

Task 4: Energy Metabolism

Assessment Criterion P4, M1, D1

You have been asked to prepare a booklet for people at the exhibition to take away with them when the leave. The booklet needs to explain the functioning of the body systems associated with energy metabolism. You should choose two systems to include in the booklet.

Energy metabolism:  Role of energy in the body;  anabolism and catabolism  the significance of ATP  cellular respiration and its by-product  endothermy of mammals  muscle action  protein synthesis

The roles of the cardiovascular, respiratory and digestive systems in supplying the necessary molecules and in removing by-products

 Cardiovascular system – cardiac cycle, heart rate, role of pacemaker, blood pressure, pulmonary and systemic circulation, formation of tissue fluid  Respiratory system – Inspiration, expiration, gaseous exchange  Digestive system – role in digestion and absorption of nutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, fats and nucleic acids); role of enzymes (amylases, proteases, lipases and nucleases); products of digestion (amino acids, sugars, glycerol and fatty acids, nucleotides), their absorption and subsequent roles in metabolism; the storage of excess fats and carbohydrates; deamination of excess proteins and the fate of end products; roles of the liver kidneys

Unit 5 – Physiology and Anatomy for Health and Social Care 7 OCR Level 3 Cambridge Technicals in Health and Social Care

The evidence for this task will be:

 A booklet that explains the physiology of two named body systems in relation to energy metabolism in the body (P4)  Your booklet should contain an explanation of how the two body systems interrelate to provide for the body’s energy needs (M1)  Your booklet should also contain an analysis of how systems of the body use energy (D1)

Task 5: Homeostasis

Assessment Criterion P5, M2, D2

You have now been asked to produce a handout that explains to people the concept of homeostasis. How does the body maintain the optimum conditions for energy metabolism? And what are the consequences of homeostatic processes falling in the body

Homeostasis: definition; the need for a constant internal environment and the consequences of any major disturbances; the concept of negative feedback

Homeostatic mechanisms for the regulation of:

 Heart rate  Blood pressure  Breathing rate  Body temperature  Blood glucose levels  Blood concentration levels

The evidence for this task will be:

 A handout that explains the concept of homeostasis (P5)  Your handout should explain how the body maintains the optimum conditions for energy metabolism (M2)  Your handout should also analyse the consequences of homeostatic processes falling in the body (D2)

Task 6: Interpreting data obtained from an individual

Assessment Criterion P6, M3

You need to prepare yourself to carry out tests related to homeostasis and includes practical work and a written report. Firstly, carry out an activity based on a standard period of exercise, observing health and safety considerations. Collect data for heart rate, breathing rate and temperature before and after a standard period of exercise. Secondly, produce a report of the data collected from the standard period of exercise using tables and/or graphs. Interpret your findings and include comments about the validity and reliability of the data.

HINT: You need to include a moderate level of exertion for learners carried out for a period of 10-15 minutes, subject to individual capabilities. You should take measurements before the exercise, immediately after the exercise is over and two or three further readings in the first five minutes of the recovery period, and then at longer intervals until readings have returned to pre- exercise levels.

Measurements:  pulse rate,  breathing rate,  temperature,  blood pressure;  normal values and ranges;  safe practice and recognition of factors affecting reliability of measurements

Normal variation:  resting values,  values after exercise,  recovery times

Data presentation:  graphs,  charts  interpretations/explanations of collated data.
