CLARITY IMAGERY SURVEY SCHEDULE (ISS)

Imagery is used all the time. However the type of imagery is not always visual, and is often so fleeting as to be below the level of awareness. Try these exercises to find your imagery profile. It will help customize the kinds of images needed to help strengthen positive thoughts, resist temptations and avoid relapse.

The Imagery Survey Schedule (ISS) is an assessment of an individual’s ability to imagine.

Part l is a sample of Part II and is used for practice.

Part II contains a total of 51 items in various sections assessing your overall imagery ability.

 general imagery ability for each of the six senses  physical imagery ability  psychological imagery ability  specific imagery ability within each of the six senses  physical and psychological imagery. o Physical or somatic imagery is defined as physical feelings or sensations suggested by words like "hungry" or "relaxed." o Psychological imagery is defined as a mental feeling elicited by words like "smart" or “relaxed."

More general categories and specific words are both rated for pleasantness, vividness and ease or rapidity of obtaining the image.

 The ease and vividness rating is a three-part scale of high, medium and low.  The pleasantness rating and unpleasantness rating is a 9-point continuum from very unpleasant very pleasant.

Practice Sheet with Examples and General Instructions.

This is a practice sheet. Use it as an example to practice you imagery skills. For each word, read the word then close your eyes and try to imagine that you are actually perceiving, or sensing, something (anything) that the word may suggest to you. If you are able to obtain an image, or sensation, concentrate on it for a few seconds (if possible) then rate it. If the word does not produce an image within approximately 10 to 20 seconds, indicate this by placing a check mark in the appropriate column and go on to the next word.

Example No. 1. Onion: No image was produced

Example No. 2. Grass: An image was obtained and it was High in ease of production, medium in Vividness and of Much Pleasantness.

Practice Word No. 1. Car: Try to imagine that you are actually looking at a car. Remember to concentrate on the visual sensation for a few seconds before rating it.

Practice Word No. 2. Howl: Try to imagine that you are actually listening to a howling sound; concentrate on it, then rate it.

Self Rating Scale: General Imagery Ability

Let us begin. This part is quit vague. Please rate below, first of all, your general ability to produce imagery by checking under the appropriate columns to the right of the first word, General.

Next rate your general ability to obtain specific imagery with each of the six senses listed below (sight, sound, taste, touch, smell, and motion). Finally rate your ability to produce physical (bodily) and psychological (mental) feelings.

In this section, we purposely refrain from suggesting a specific word or phrase to imagine. This allows some people to do a better job without constraints. For others, this is too difficult and can be skipped.
