Course Outline

Course Prescription Sustainability is the study and application of knowledge about how, individuals, and/or institutions direct the course of an organization or community in ways that restore and enhance; human, natural, manufactured, and financial capital to generate stakeholder value and contribute to the well-being of current and future generations.

Students in this course on Sustainable Business will review its concepts and principles, develop appropriate managerial measures and undertake a facilitated practicum.

Class time will be largely spent in lecture, discussion, case studies and experiential exercises. The practicum will enable students to apply learning’s from the theoretical literature to a real situation.

Goals of the Course In order to create a sustainable economic, social and physical environment, leaders need to understand both themselves and the concepts, principles, and practices associated with sustainable business practice.

Learning Outcomes 1. To critically review the fundamental concepts, principles and practices of Sustainability and Sustainable Management. 2. To explore the complexities of managing sustainably in a globally integrated economic, social and physical environment. 3. To develop skills related to leadership, team development and conflict resolution. 4. To review and understand the use of problem solving skills in individual, group, and team situations. 5. To further develop skills required to effectively communicate coherent written and oral presentations to important stakeholders.

Competencies

1 The student will be introduced to: a. Diagnostic tools for enhancing awareness of issues relating to sustainability and sustainable management. b. The issues of ethical behavior, leadership and diversity for a modern sustainable economy.

2. The student will understand: a. Why and how sustainable business diagnostic tools improve business performance.

b. The skills and abilities related to power, influence, and leadership and their importance to sustainable management.

3. The student will be able to: a. Undertake a sustainability audit for a community or organization.

b. Generate, select and refine options for a community or organizational sustainable management plan. c. Present written and oral sustainable management reports.

Learning and Teaching As an elective course that explores fundamental concepts sustainable business teaching will focus on critically reviewing. Students will examine how sustainability, in particular, relates and integrates with the core functions of business. This will be achieved classroom discussion, individual and group assignments and appropriate tests.

Assessment Students will be required to complete an individual assignment worth 25% of the final grade; a group report worth 30% of the final grade; participate in a ten minute group presentation worth 20% and maintain a reflective journal worth 20% of the final grade.

Assignments:

1. Explain how the concepts, principles and practices of Sustainable Management can benefit a selected community or business organization.(due3/3/10) 2. Co-write/present a Sustainable Development Report that critically evaluates the sustainable management options and appropriate measures for a designated South Coast community or enterprise. (due 5/12/10) Test:

The test will be a take home, essay style open book expected to take 2 hours (due 5/5/10). It will require students to demonstrate in integrated answers a mastery of the learning outcomes set.

Reflective Journal:

As a test of your understanding of the principles, purpose and practices of sustainable development derived from the readings, lectures and discussions you are to maintain a reflective journal.(due 5/12/10)

The journal is to: a. be kept from 1/25/10 to the 5/5/10 inclusive, b. identify the key sustainability issues and challenges which confront the South Coast region, c. indicate the strengthens and weaknesses of the political and business responses. d. demonstrate an understanding of the theory and principles of Sustainable Development

Program and Course Advice Students are required to critically examine sustainable managerial practices within the United States and globally. In particular it is expected that they will become familiar with the policies and practices of organizations and communities recognized for their leadership of the “Sustainability Movement” within the United States.
