Dear Redmond Community and Friends,
Plenty of information to share; as always, feel free to forward…..
Cheeseburger in Paradise National Night Out Against Crime 2012 is Tuesday, August 7th this year (always the first Tuesday in August)…and a sunny day is always guaranteed. We ask neighborhoods, businesses, and apartment complexes to participate in the 29th Annual NNO. The police department, fire department, city council, mayor, and others will attend as many parties as possible between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. We ask citizens of Redmond to turn their porch lights on and come outside to take a stand against crime with your neighbors—some do BBQs, potlucks, ice cream socials….the fun/list is endless. If you’ve never done this, it’s a great event for fun, friends, and community! Note this year we have an online registration form. For more information, visit: www.redmond.gov/PublicSafety/Police/national_night_out
School’s Out for Summer The PD will be participating in a NEW program offered by the Parks and Recreation Department this summer called Safety Town. It’s a week long day camp designed to build a foundation of safety awareness in young children and incorporates personal, pedestrian, passenger, home and play safety in a fun atmosphere that develops confidence, self-reliance and sound decision-making abilities. Classroom visitors, games, crafts, music, stories, films and role playing are a part of the safe behavior instruction. Children must be potty trained to attend camp. We are just one session of what is a week-long activity being planned by our Parks and Rec folks—lots of fun for the kiddos. For more information and to register, visit www.redmond.gov/register or call 425-556-2300.
Workin’ for the Weekend Bellevue PD sent this information out a little while ago, but thought it would come in handy given the summertime is often when people have work done to homes. Here is a website to do research on contractors along with some safety precautions when employing them: www.lni.wa.gov/TradesLicensing/Contractors/HireCon/default.asp
I Fought the Law For those who haven’t heard, crime numbers were down considerably in Redmond in 2011. Thanks to all of you for taking proactive precautions so you aren’t a victim and forwarding safety tips. With 24- hour media/internet/social media, it’s easy to think crime is up, but nationally crime has been declining for the last several years. Here is the press release which includes a link to additional crime stats, including a comparison since 1985: www.redmond.gov/cms/One.aspx? portalId=169&pageId=77449. Also, if you’d like to read the 2011 Police Department Annual Report, you can find it at the bottom of our main page: www.redmond.gov/Police.
Two reminders….
Shelter from the Storm The Office of Emergency Management has scheduled the next Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training for every Tuesday evening from 6:00-9:00 p.m. beginning September 4 for eight weeks, culminating with a final disaster drill on Saturday, October 27th. This training prepares you in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. For more info, visit www.redmond.gov/PublicSafety/DisasterPreparedness/cert.
Bicycle Race Bicycle helmets are on sale at the Redmond Police Department for the low, low price of $10. The person wearing the helmet must be present so they can be custom fit. Appointments are required and you can make one by contacting our lovely and talented Volunteer Coordinator Nicole Rogers at 425- 556-2632 ([email protected]). And while you’re at it, plan for the winter—ski/snowboard helmets are sold for $20 each! For more info, visit: www.redmond.gov/PublicSafety/Police/safety_resources.
Be safe, Jim
