Dear Student

The University has informed us that you have been allocated a community placement with the North East Fife School Nursing Team. You will be allocated within one of our bases within North East Fife. These are Adamson Hospital in Cupar, St Andrews Community Hospital or Skeith Health Centre in Anstruther. Please contact me on the above number prior to commencement of your placement in order to ascertain which base would suit you best. You will be expected to report to your placement base at 9.15 am on the day you arrive. Normal hours are from 8.30 am until 4.30 pm, but this is negotiable. Your mentor will be Fiona Crook (School Nurse Team Leader), or one of the School Nurse Team. Please wear smart, comfortable clothing for your School Nursing placement. There are canteen facilities at St Andrews and Cupar or elsewhere there are staff rooms with microwaves for re-heating food. Car parking is available but varies depending on the base. Fiona Crook (School Nurse Team Leader) PLACEMENT PHILOSOPHY

We will provide you with a full orientation, fire safety and emergency procedures on your first day of placement.

We will provide you with individualised, needs led, evidence based learning environment suitable to your stage of education.

You will be expected to assist your own learning through questioning, research and team work.

Together with your mentor’s guidance and knowledge of experiences and opportunities available on this placement you will be given the opportunity to plan an individualised timetable of learning.

All objectives set between student and mentor will be realistic and within the student’s capabilities. Mentors will provide continuous feedback and action plans to help you achieve these.

Time will be given for reflection and review.

We will provide you with prompt support if objectives are not being met. Practice Education Facilitators and Personal Tutors will support both students and mentors in this area.

We will treat all students with respect and value their contribution to safe and effective delivery of care.

We plan to make this an enlightening, enjoyable placement experience for you. INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS AND MENTORS

Welcome to the School Nurse Team. The Team has responsibility for the provision of School Nurse Service within 3 High Schools and 39 Primary Schools within North East Fife. In addition to this, there are specific services we provide to Kilmaron School, Falkland House Residential School, St Leonards private school and Kirkgate off –campus centre. This folder contains information which should be of assistance to you while you are on placement. We hope you enjoy your placement here and feel like part of the team.

This profile of learning opportunities is a document which details learning opportunities within your School Nursing placement. It is intended that mentors and students utilize this resource to select appropriate learning opportunities to help students meet their specified competencies. It is expected that you will use this file as a resource and be proactive in identifying your own learning needs.

Most of the learning opportunities will take place with a variety of community nurses including district nurses, health visitors, public health nurses, specialist nurses and primary care nurses. There may also be an opportunity to observe the work of allied health professionals, social work or voluntary agencies.

These diverse opportunities are not always available, however this document gives an overview of the inter agency and multi professional contacts which students may encounter.

On the first day of the placement it is expected that you will have an induction to the practice placement area. Please ensure that the induction checklist is completed and retained in this profile.

Following your placement we would encourage you to evaluate your experience. Student evaluation forms will be returned to the practice area and helps us to improve the experience for other students.

To gain insight into the use of Patient Group Directions including correct storage and transportation of vaccines by maintaining the cold chain. Also safe administration of vaccine and subsequent accurate documentation.

To observe interagency working in accordance with policies and procedures with regards the safe administration of medicines in schools.
