Justice Matters May 1, 2006

Present: Dena, Ann, Elbert, Sara, Matt K, Micah, Jeremy, Leesa, Jessi, Justin VZ, Ginelle, Bethany H, DSchel. (I’m sorry if I missed anyone—you do matter—but I am recording who was there after the fact!)

1. We have enough money a. Ask Ann about money for soup—will be reimbursed to our home addresses? 2. Thank yous a. Carrie Foods b. Casey’s c. People who helped at the tent, etc d. Professor VERSLUIS!! e. Dr. Kok 3. Ryan’s presentation a. Dena is in touch with Versluis to arrange when/where to send it b. May need help taking it down and shipping it 4. Leadership for next year a. Make sure to emphasize that the club is non-partisan b. The bigger problem is apathy! Students may use the liberal hippies as an excuse not to get involved c. Amanda Allen from NWC IJM: work together next year: will contact Elbert d. Change website—get rid of BFTW i. Elbert: change website stuff over summer-contact Jeremy 5. JUSTICE WEEK a. Next year: i. Do it earlier in the semester ii. Advertise at NWC iii. Tent was a big draw—do again. iv. Organize more in advance—details and everything. Ann and Sara hardly did anything besides Justice Matters stuff all week…. v. Don’t worry about money—the Lord will provide! vi. Delegate—get as many people involved as possible vii. Possibly go to Sudan with the lady from Sioux Falls? viii. 6. NEXT YEAR a. A tidbit of the week in the Today each week. Significant facts about hunger, genocide, environment, etc to combat ignorance b. T-shirts : « Seek Justice » from IJM as a fund raiser or create our own i. Alternative: “I’m a Wal-Mart hating, folk-music listening, thrift store shopping, long haired liberal hippie and I THINK JUSTICE MATTERS” c. Start out with something big—an activity early on. d. Have enough people at Club day…. e. Make sure people know how to get involved f. Think about who wants to be leadership-take on an event or the whole year g. We have a date for serving at the Banquet in February—but we would like to move it earlier to make it an attention-grabbing event? h. Political issues: Immigration reform is a big issue-forum? i. Local justice issues—hispanic immigrants, etc. i. Jessi would like to be involved because “I JUST KNOW JUSTICE MATTERS!” i. Jessi told a very entertaining story about their walk to Orange City and the nice RA named David from NWC j. I know it sounds a little too detailed-oriented, but we have learned (the hard way) that having an agenda for what needs to be done at meetings and taking minutes about who is assigned to which task IS VERY HELPFUL AND IMPORTANT. Someone should do this every time.

7. Jim Skillen, president of the Center of Public Justice (CPJ) will be coming next year. Think about how to get students excited about CPJ and its work. www.cpjustice.org 8. More environmental concerns a. Kuhl property-what is Dordt going to do with that? Talk to Del VanderZee and Matthew Stutz about it—he was on the committee i. Plans are different from what the environmental science class recommended b. Adopt-a-Highway on hwy 75-Sara will give you details. We need to re- sign up for that. 9. We don’t want to lose the momentum from this year!
