Particularly for the Purpose of Associating Teachers SEFEL Experience with Child Outcomes

Teachers’ Experience with SEFEL: Four Different Levels April 2016

Particularly for the purpose of associating teachers’ SEFEL experience with child outcomes scores, we can categorize teachers according to the extent to which they have received SEFEL training and coaching. These data will be used for program evaluation purposes. This is not intended to be used for a prescription for coaching. These four levels should be adequate for describing teachers’ experience with SEFEL -- once Foundations Emotional-Social professional development has saturated the state. Until then, it may be necessary to use ‘sub-levels’ to capture teachers who are participating in SEFEL, but have not received training in all 11 of the Foundations Emotional-Social modules. See levels 3a and 4a below.

Level 1 Teachers Teachers at the first level of experience with SEFEL (‘Level 1’) are those who have not met the Level 2 Teacher criteria. Level 1 teachers are those who have  Not received training in all 11 of the Foundations Emotional-Social modules  Not yet received SEFEL coaching. Level 2 Teachers Teachers at the second level of experience with SEFEL (‘Level 2’) are those who have  Received training in all Foundations Emotional-Social Modules 1-11  Not yet received SEFEL coaching. Level 3 Teachers Teachers at the third level of experience with SEFEL (‘Level 3’) are those who have  Received training in all Foundations Emotional-Social Modules 1-11  Received SEFEL coaching  Not reached fidelity on the TPOT o Level 3a Teachers are those who have received SEFEL coaching, have not reached fidelity on the TPOT, and who have NOT received training in all 11 of the Foundations Emotional- Social modules. Level 4 Teachers Teachers at the fourth level of experience with SEFEL (‘Level 4’) are those who have  Received training in all Foundations Emotional-Social Modules 1-11  Received SEFEL coaching  Reached fidelity on the TPOT o Level 4a Teachers are those who have received SEFEL coaching, have reached fidelity on the TPOT, and who have NOT received training in all 11 of the Foundations Emotional- Social module.

*Note: If a teacher who has reached Level 4 receives a TPOT in a subsequent year and does not maintain fidelity, the program should consider working with the teacher as if she/he were a level 3 teacher. However, for program evaluation purposes please continue to code that teacher as Level 4.
