Animal Phyla Research and Presentations – DUE JUNE 2 nd

The Assignment: Your Animal: ______A. You will be randomly assigned an animal from one of the nine major animal phyla. B. You will research your animal and prepare an oral presentation (5 minutes in length) that explains how your organism is a unique member of the Kingdom Animalia. The following lists the minimum information that will be included in your oral presentation: a) Physical Characteristics e) Respiration (gas exchange) b) Habitat f) Excretion c) Nutrition g) Reproduction d) Classification Status (phylum, class, order, family) C. In addition to sharing basic factual information with your audience, you will be required to develop a strategy that will make your presentation both captivating and entertaining. This will be achieved in at least three ways: i) Presentations will be done in first person (i.e., I am a frog!) ii) Presentations will also require a theme of some sort (e.g., game show, dating service video, infomercial, family vacation slide show, life-time achievement award, first date). iii) Presentations will be very visual.

Your Grade: (will be based on the following) Total Points: 35 (below scores added and divided by 2)

A. Accuracy of Information (Including all requirements) - 15 points B. Organization and Timing (5 minutes) – 5 points C. Theme (present theme if not obvious) – 5 points D. Visual Aids – 10 points – No information allowed on Visual. (Only Titles and Pictures) a. This includes, but not limited to, overheads, posters, ppt, drawings, movie clips, etc. b. Make sure your visuals are LARGE and easy to see E. Creative Expression: - 15 points a. With your animal as the focus, use your creative genius to come up with something creative to share during your presentation. This must be created by you “from scratch”. i. Examples include; song, food, video, poem, drawing, painting, photo essay, costume design, 3-D model, hanging mobile, children’s story, puppet show, dress-up, build an animal. (will not be counted as your visual aid) ii. PowerPoint presentations and posters will be counted as visual aids, not creative expression. F. Interest and Razzle Dazzle Grade – 20 points a. Can you keep the interest of the audience? b. Are you excited and enthusiastic about your animal? Additional Notes: 1. Flashcards may be used, but do not simply read your presentation. 2. Practice in front of friends and family. Practice makes perfect. 3. You may involve other students in the class for your presentation. 4. If you need technology related hardware, please request in advance. ALL movies must be turned in early, and PPT’s must be emailed prior to presentation. (DUE JUNE 1st – NO EXCEPTIONS)
