22nd Annual COMP Cams® Topless 100 On Tap For August 14-16 At Batesville Motor Speedway
Memphis, TN – The COMP Cams® Topless 100 is one of the most anticipated crown jewels of the Dirt Late Model calendar. It will be held at the 3/8-mile Batesville Motor Speedway for the 22nd time on the weekend of August 14-16.
Each year dozens of the nation’s top Dirt Late Model competitors descend on Batesville, Arkansas, in search of the coveted title of COMP Cams® Topless 100 Champion and the $40,000 prize that goes along with it. The unique race is contested with the cars’ roof sheet metal removed, providing an up-close look at the drivers as they work in the cockpit. Some of the biggest names in the history of the sport, such as Freddy Smith, Scott Bloomquist and Billy Moyer, have added their names to the winner’s list, but the race has featured its fair share of surprises, including two this decade. In 2010 Batesville native Jared Landers took home the checkers and was propelled to national prominence, while the 2013 edition of the event saw Springfield, Missouri’s Terry Phillips pull an upset victory.
This year’s on-track slate kicks off with a practice night on Thursday, August 14, with qualifying and heat race action getting underway the following evening. The 100-lap feature will take place the night of Saturday the 16 th, after the last- chance B-Main races. Two complete shows for IMCA Modifieds will also be part of the program on both Friday and Saturday night.
Along with the expected field of Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series stars, including Jimmy Owens, Don O’Neal, Steve Francis, Earl Pearson, Jr. and others, in 2014 the event is being co-sanctioned by the COMP Cams ® Super Dirt Series – a regional tour that contests many of its events within the borders of The Natural State. It means that this year former series champions such as Kyle Beard and Brandon Smith will have as good a shot as ever to hoist the prestigious Topless 100 trophy. Add local favorites such as Moyer, his son Billy Moyer, Jr., Landers and Wendell Wallace, and you have the makings of a race for the ages.
“Every year the Topless 100 is full of great surprises and we expect this year to be no different,” said Chris Douglas, COMP Performance Group™ VP of Marketing. “It’s a race that both the competitors and fans are very passionate about. That desire to be a part of the show is just one of the many reasons we’re proud to have the COMP Cams ® brand associated with this crown-jewel event.”
