Toileting 1302.47(b)(6) DHS 340:110-3-297(c) Policy

To ensure each child’s toileting needs are done in a safe, sanitary, and respectful manner.

Procedure

1. All bathrooms will have access to a minimum of one sink with hot and cold or tempered running water from an adequate water source and one toilet for every 15 children.

2. All bathroom surfaces must be cleaned, sanitized and in good repair throughout the day.

3. All bathrooms will be supplied with toilet paper, paper towels and liquid soap. Children will be taught to flush toilet and wash hands after each use.

4. Paper towel holders, toilet paper holders and liquid soap dispensers will be within easy access to the children.

5. When a child cannot reach the sink without assistance, non-slip safe stools will be provided to assist the child.

6. Adequate accommodations and adaptations will be made and utilized to assist children with disabilities.

7. Staff will monitor and offer assistance to children during toileting process to insure that proper hygiene and safety is maintained.

8. Staff will follow Universal Precautions to avoid direct contact with body fluids when assisting children with toileting.

9. In the event that a child has a toileting accident, staff must wear disposable gloves to assist child and to sanitize any soiled areas.

10. Staff will not embarrass or punish a child or show disapproval for toileting accidents.

11. Feces may by disposed of in the toilet however, wet and soiled items are prohibited from being rinsed. Items are placed in a sealed, labeled, moisture-proof bag and sent home.
