Using Wildcard Characters

To Search for Files and Folders, Click the Start Button.

Select the Search Menu.

Select the For Files or Folders Menu Item.

The Search Results Window Opens.

Select the Look In Combo Box to Select the Search Location.

Select the Item Where You Want to Search.

Conducting a Basic Search

Select the Search for Files or Folders Named Text Box.

Enter the Filename to Search for.

Click the Search Now Button.

Search Results List all File Names that Include the Search Variable.

Isolating Your Search by Document Type Using a Wildcard Character

A Wildcard Character is a Keyboard Character Such as an Asterisk (*) or a Question Mark (?) Often Used in Place of One or More Characters.

All Documents End in File Extensions. For Example: Word (.doc), Excel (.xls), PowerPoint (.ppt), Access (.mdb) and Pictures (.jpg).

To Search for All Documents of One Kind, Type an Asterisk (*) Before the File Extension. Example: *.doc

Search Results List all Documents of that File Type.

Using a Wildcard Character to Replace Words in a Filename

Type an Asterisk (*) Before the Search Variable to Retrieve All Documents that End in the Variable name. Example: *calendar

Search Results List all Documents Ending in the Search Variable.

Type an Asterisk (*) After the Search Variable to Retrieve all Documents that Begin with the Variable name. Example: calendar*

Search Results List all Documents that Begin with the Search Variable.

Using a Wildcard Character to Replace Letters in a Filename

Type a Question Mark (?) to Replace any Single Character in a Filename. This Works Well If You Do Not Know the Correct Spelling. Example: cal?ndar

Search Results List all Documents that Fit the Search Variable.
