First Ever Student Mural Contest

The outcome of the student mural contest is for an individual student or a group of students to submit a design for a potential mural that will be used by the Manteca Mural Society.

The winning design will be awarded $250; second place will receive $100; and third place will earn $50. All winners will get the opportunity to work with the artist contracted to oversee the mural. The high school with the winning student or student team will be awarded $500 in art supplies.

Guidelines:

 There is no fee for submitting designs  Art work may be submitted as individual or as a group  Artists may submit up to two designs (Spray artist welcome to submit)  Designs will be accepted through December 1, 2009.  Top 3 finalists will be notified no later than January 2, 2010.  The winning design and artist(s) will be announced February 3, 2010.

Eligibility:  All high school students attending and/or residing in the Manteca Unified School District boundaries. The student may attend a high school outside the district. Design Submission: o Create an original design according to the requirements listed below. o Complete the Design Entry (see attached form). o Turn in all required materials on or before December 1, 2009. o Entries will not be accepted, for any reason, after the submission deadline o All entries must be in sealed envelopes and include the following  Completed original Design Entry Form;  The signed Conditions/Release Form;  The design should have no markings and/or name to identify the artist(s);  Original design must be 1:3 scale and can be submitted on paper, canvas, or poster board. Entry Limit:  Each artist or team of artists may submit a maximum of two designs  Each design must be submitted separately and include all of the above elements. Design Requirements:  Designs must be to scale with colors matching as closely as possible the proposed final design 1:3.  Artwork will be accepted in the following formats: print, PDF, or Photo Shop.  Designs may be in color or black and white.  Designs must incorporate a life or lifestyle in the Manteca area, which may be historical or present perspective. Designs will be ineligible for consideration if they do not meet ALL of the specified requirements above, submission guidelines and deadlines. In addition, a design shall be deemed ineligible if it contains any material which the Judges, in their sole discretion, deem patently offensive such as anything depicting profanity, violence or nudity. By submitting a design:  Artist(s) represent and warrant that design is wholly original, has not previously been submitted or distributed in any way and will not be used for any other purpose once submitted; and will not be used by Artist(s) or any other person for any other purpose, and does not incorporate or include anything that is owned by any third party or would require the consent of any third party, and design does not violate any copyright, trademark, publicity right, privacy right or an other right of any third party.  Artist(s) agrees that design shall be a “work made for hire,” with all rights therein, including, without limitation, the exclusive copyright, being the property of The Manteca Mural Society. The Manteca Mural Society will retain the right of refusal for any design submitted. In the event a submitted design is used at a later date, for any purpose, the artist(s) will be compensated.

Judging: Judging will be preformed in three stages: 1. The Preliminary Review will be completed by December 16, 2009 to determine the top 10 designs; all designs will be reviewed by the Manteca Mural Society, to determine the top 10 designs to ensure they are in compliance with all parameters mentioned above and contain all required elements. 2. The top 3 finalists will be determined by January 5, 2010. The Top 3 designs will be selected by a panel of local artists (exempt from the contest), community leaders, and business professionals. The top 3 Artists will be notified no later than January 5, 2010 and will be invited to be present at the announcement, date and time will be determined. 3. The winner (to be announced on or about February 3, 2010) will be selected by the Artistic Selection Committee of the Manteca Mural Society.

Designs will be judged equally based on the following criteria: creativity, technical ability and popular appeal. In the event of a tie between designs, the designs will be re-judged by an additional judge who will serve as the tie- breaker and who will evaluate designs according to the above parameters.

The artist(s) of the winning design may be contracted by the Manteca Mural Society to realize their design at a specified location. Artist(s) will enter into a separate contract with the Manteca Mural Society.

Conditions/Release: By participating, Artist(s) (a) agrees to these Official Rules and the decisions of the Judges, Manteca Mural Society and its agents, which decisions shall be final in all respects; and (b) agrees to defend, release and hold harmless Manteca Mural Society and their respective officers, directors, shareholders and employees (collectively “Releases”) from and against any actions, claims and/or liability for injury, loss or damage of any kind, including any for the violation of infringement of any proprietary or personal right of any individual or entity, resulting in whole or in part from participating in the Mural Design Contest (including in connection with the use or exploitation of any design), or the use or acceptance of a prize. Neither releases nor any service providers are responsible for incorrect or inaccurate transcription of entry information, or for any human or other error, technical malfunctions, slot/delayed designs, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, or any other error or malfunction, or any injury or damage to participant’s or any other person’s design equipment resulting from participation in this contest. At any time prior to final judging, Manteca Mural Society may select, on the basis of stated judging criteria, from eligible entries received up to two (2) designs to be shown as part of public relations/press material. A participant whose entry is selected for such promotional purposes will be contacted via phone and required to complete and submit any documents required by Manteca Mural Society to vest rights of use and/or ownership of design. Designs selected for this purpose will still be eligible to be selected as the winning design and this preliminary selection will have no bearing upon the final judging process. By submitting a design, you grant to Manteca Mural Society and their affiliated companies the right, except where prohibited by law, to use your name, likeness, photo, voice and or biographical information.

I, the undersigned, have read the Entry Application and Rules, and understand and agree to comply with all the rules including the waiver of liability. I also understand that the decisions of the judges are final. I grant Manteca Mural Society the right to publish any of these designs in its publications, electronic newsletters, and on its website, including but not limited to, its promotional materials.

LIABILITY: Care will be taken in handling and securing images, however, Manteca Mural Society assumes no responsibility for loss or damage to the work.
