ST. JAMES ANTIOCHIAN ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN CHURCH February 9, 2014 Very Rev. Amin Houli Pastor (248) 709-6951 Subdeacon Ron Skulas (859) 462-0490 Confession by Appointment EOTHINON 11 TONE 8 اللحن 8 اليوثينا 11 Sunday of the Pharisee and the Publican & Leave-Taking of the Presentation (Meeting) of Christ Nikephoros the Martyr of Antioch, Bishops Markellos, Philagrios, & Pankratios the Hieromartyrs, and Innocent, First Bishop of Irkutsk

For Non-Orthodox Christians We welcome all people across all ethnicities and religions to pray with us. However, it is an unfortunate consequence that there are divisions of Christianity, and therefore, we cannot extend to you a general invitation to receive the Eucharist (Holy Communion). Orthodox Christians believe that the Eucharist is an action of the celebrating community, signifying a oneness in faith, life, and worship. Reception of the Eucharist by Christians not fully united with the Orthodox Church would imply a oneness, which does not yet exist, and for which we must all pray. We invite you to receive the blessed and holy bread that is given out to all at the end of the service, and are very pleased that you are with us this morning. REFRAINS OF THE FIRST ANTIPHON My heart is inditing a good matter: I speak of the things, which I have made concerning the king: my tongue is the pen of a ready writer. (Refrain) Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us. Grace is poured into thy lips: therefore God hath blessed thee forever. (Refrain) Glory… Both now… (Refrain)

REFRAINS OF THE SECOND ANTIPHON Gird Thy sword upon Thy thigh, O most mighty one, with Thy glory and Thy majesty. Bend Thy bow, and prosper, and reign. 1 (Refrain) Save us, O Son of God, Who wast borne in the arms of righteous Simeon; who sing to Thee. Alleluia. Thine arrows are sharp in the heart of the king’s enemies; whereby the people fall under Thee. (Refrain) The scepter of Thy kingdom is a righteous scepter. (Refrain) Glory… Both now… O, only begotten Son and Word of God…

REFRAINS OF THE THIRD ANTIPHON Hearken, O daughter, and consider, and incline thine ear; forget also thine own people, and thy father’s house. Even the rich among the people shall entreat thy favor. I will make thy name to be remembered in all generations. (Now sing the Apolytikion of the Presentation.)

THE EISODIKON (ENTRANCE HYMN) OF ORDINARY SUNDAYS The Lord hath made known His salvation; He hath revealed His justice in the sight of the Gentiles. Save us, O Son of God, Who art risen from the dead; who sing to Thee. Alleluia. )After the Entrance, sing the hymns in the following order below.)

Sunday Troparion in the Eighth Tone From the heights thou didst descend, O compassionate One, and thou didst submit to the three-day burial, that thou might deliver us from passions. Thou art our life and our resurrection, O Lord, glory to thee.

KONTAKION OF THE PRESENTATION IN TONE 1 Today thou hast come to save us, O Christ our God, who through thy birth hast sanctified the virginal womb, and hast now blessed the arms of Simeon. O Lord, keep thy people in peace during wars, and strengthen thy flock in every good deed, for thou alone art the Lover of mankind.

THE EPISTLE (For the Sunday of the Pharisee and Publican) My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.* (2 Timothy 3:10-15) Timothy, my son, you have carefully followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my perseverance, my persecutions, and afflictions, which happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured. And out of them all, the Lord rescued me. Yes, and all who desire to live godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. But sinful people and impostors will grow from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

3 * The Prokeimenon is for the Presentation, in recognition of the Leave- taking of the Feast.

THE GOSPEL The reading from the Holy gospel according to St. Luke Luke 18:1014 The Lord spoke this parable: "Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax-collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank You that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax-collector. I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax-collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes t o heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!" I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for every one Who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted."

WISDOM OF THE FATHERS

Prayer that rises up in someone's heart serves to open up for us the door of heaven: that person stands in converse with the Divinity and gives pleasure to the Son of God.

St. Ephraim the Syrian

In order to struggle with bad thoughts, an Orthodox person must firmly turn away from and depart from all that can elicit these bad thoughts.

Metropolitan Philaret

God descends to the humble as waters flow down from the hills into the valleys.

St. Tikhon of Voronezh

Proper Church Behavior Whenever we are preparing to come to church, we should remember that we are entering the House of God. · Come to church on time. Matins begins at 10:15, Divine Liturgy at 11:15. · Do not talk during services. · There is no eating, drinking, or gum chewing during services. · Do not take Communion if you arrive after the reading of the Holy Gospel. · Generously give a donation when the offering tray circulates. · Do not use cell-phones inside the church. · No playing electronic devices, even for young children. · Do not cross your legs in church. · When entering the church, make the sign of the cross. · Wear church-appropriate clothing: nothing revealing, low cut, or tight fitting. · Stop all movements upon the reading of the Holy Gospel, wherever you are in church. · When entering, generously donate the cost of a candle, and light it in prayer. · Stay in church after Communion, until the Divine Liturgy ends, and the announcements are completed.
