Jefferson County Building Official Job Description July 2006

Title: Building Official/ Inspector

Department: Planning and Zoning

General Statement of duties: Inspect residential and commercial buildings, structures and projects for compliance with building codes, ordinance, zoning, and safety requirements. Reviews all plans submitted for permits for compliance with the applicable codes.

Supervision Received: Works under the Planning and Zoning Administrator and the County Commissioners

Essential Duties:  Reviews all plans submitted for permits to verify compliance with the applicable codes and issues building permits with appropriate approvals.  Inspects structural components of residential and commercial buildings under construction, remodeling projects, signs, fences and demolition projects to see that they comply with applicable codes.  Uses building codes, ordinances, zoning and building use requirements as guidelines for inspections and assists in enforcement of same.  Issues building permits, estimating value of proposed project and collects fees.  Answers telephone and in-person inquires and complaints regarding building codes and requirements.  Discusses projects with contractors and builder and coordinates with all other county departments that may be involved in the project.  Stays abreast with code changes.  Maintains appropriate records  Works with Fire Marshall in coordinating inspection to reduce duplication of efforts.  Considerable knowledge of basic construction practices and procedures including good familiarity with the 2000 International Building Codes  Ability to deal with the public, contractors and builders with firmness, courtesy and tact.  Ability to observe requirement violations and take appropriate action to correct.  Ability to go to the job site and access all portions of a building in various stages of construction to visually inspect different parts of the building for compliance, which may require the use of ladders and other means of getting to different parts of the project over rough terrain or other obstructions.  Ability to take instructions, plan work and carry through efficiently.  Ability to work independently

Preferred Skills Knowledge and Abilities:

 College degree in related field (High School graduation required)  5 years management experience in construction or related field  Idaho Certified Building Inspector License and ICBO certified  Very familiar with the International Building Codes and related standards, and have a good background in using this code.

Necessary special requirements:

 Valid Idaho Driver’s License
