HST LABORATORY SUPERVISOR

(Health Science Lab)

JOB DESCRIPTION:

FUNCTION: Coordinate HST laboratory activities: ordering of materials and supplies, training of laboratory assistants, preparing materials and equipment needed for laboratory instruction, maintaining equipment, providing security of laboratory areas, maintaining and providing necessary records. Respond to requests and needs of teaching faculty.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  Maintain current knowledge of and apply different kinds of techniques for culturing and sustaining specific strains of bacteria, preparing media plates, inoculating and culturing.  Provide and be able to prepare various biological reagents, solutions, chemicals, stains and dyes following safety procedures.  Act as liaison between faculty and administration in writing specifications for the acquisition of new medical equipment or for renovations.  Assist in implementation of regulations imposed by state and federal governmental agencies including quality control standards, if required.  Assist with computer issues involved in laboratories and computer based instrumentation; set up and maintain laboratory computers and interface equipment.  Maintain current knowledge of, set up, monitor, test, and troubleshoot laboratory and/or medical equipment.  Maintain current knowledge of and be able to repair and maintain numerous and diverse varieties of biomedical and/or science supplies and equipment. Coordinate the ordering of supplies and new equipment; arrange for processing and follow through on delivery.  Provide safe and secure storage of lab and related equipment, materials and supplies; maintain current inventory and organize stock rooms.  Ensure safe disposal of all biological materials, chemicals and radioactive materials related to courses as directed by appropriate faculty or personnel; initiate, disseminate, maintain, and monitor required procedures for disinfecting, sterilizing, and disposing of contaminated materials.  Receive additional training for handling radioactive materials and attend radiation in-service training as directed by Macomb’s Radiation Safety Officer.  Using input from faculty, create and maintain a laboratory manual outlining laboratory experiments and the preparation necessary for each course offered.  Implement and enforce a system of safety procedures for all laboratory personnel.  Recommend hiring of other employees assigned to the laboratories; train, schedule, and supervise lab assistants.  Develop and maintain science and/ or medical supplies and equipment inventories using mainframe and micro computers.  Implement a system for compliance with safety requirements of government agencies.  Communicate and work with faculty on all assigned duties.  Maintain budgets and accounts as assigned.  Use college computer system (currently Datatel) to ensure timely and cost effective purchasing.  Perform related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: General supervision received from the Associate Dean.

SUPERVISION GIVEN: May supervise part time staff as assigned.

EDUCATION: Associate Degree with a concentration in Science and/or Health Area or equivalent education as appropriate.

EXPERIENCE: One year laboratory experience desirable.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must have good mathematical ability, capable of performing calculations required in preparing formulas, adjusting equipment, and in preparing purchase requisitions. Accuracy is very important. Must have knowledge of computer use. Must be able to work with mechanical and electronic equipment.

Must be able to lift heavy equipment. Some evening work will be necessary.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Working days and hours may vary. Some evenings may be necessary. May travel between campuses and to off-campus locations.

SALARY RANGE: $34,500 - $49,067, commensurate with experience (2008 range).
