You are very strongly encouraged to attend a course at Orange. The University of Sydney Orange Agricultural College
Horse Husbandry and Management Practical
Practical sessions will commence at 8.20am on Monday and conclude between 5.30pm and 6.00pm, Monday through Thursday. Student will finish at 4.00pm on Friday.
All students must wear safe work boots while working at the Horse Demonstration Unit. You also need suitable boots for riding, ie no grip on the sole, smooth soled leather boots.
No horses are to be ridden without an approved safety helmet, which the College staff can supply if necessary.
ASSESSMENT
All students will be expected to attend work sessions as instructed. This week of practical experience will be assessed in the same manner as other work experience placements. We will be assessing your ability to work around horses, your aptitude to this type of work and your attitude in the work environment.
All work sessions will be closely supervised.
You will be working with horses ranging from foals to mature horses. You will be rostered into groups to care for these animals on a daily basis. You will be shown the normal management routines that are used on the College Horse Demonstration Unit and then be expected to practice these routines. The supervision and daily routines of feeding and cleaning the horses’ immediate environment will be the focus of your week’s experience and will be your group’s responsibility.
During your stay with us, you will be expected to ride a horse. We believe that by riding a horse, you will begin to understand the way in which a horse moves. If you associate this with the horse’s physical structure, you will gain a greater understanding of conformation and lameness associate with the horse.
You will see many horse activities throughout the week. Under the direction of our veterinarians, lecturers and instructors, you will be given the opportunity to work in the following areas:
1. Horse riding; 2. Equine reproduction; 3. Horse behaviour (breaking in); 4. Stallion behaviour; 5. Lameness, trimming and shoeing horses; 6. Yearling handling; 7. Horse restraints; 8. Catching and leading mares and foals; 9. Drenching horses; and 10. Management and husbandry routines for horses ACCOMMODATION
Accommodation is available on campus while undertaking the Orange Horse Course. The cost is $156 for 5 nights. To be viable there needs to be a minimum of 6 students per course, and if 10 or more students book, the rate per student could be reduced. If you need to stay over on the Friday night you will have to pay extra for this night. If you wish to do so please let the Faculty Office know and I will advise you of the cost involved.
Accommodation is provided on a self cater basis and students will need to supply their own cooking utensils (pots, spoons, forks, plates etc) a stove and microwave is available. Students will also need to supply their own bedding (sheets and blankets).
Accommodation is also available at ‘Colour City Caravan Park’. If you wish to stay at the caravan park it can be arranged for someone from Orange to pick up and drop you off each day at this point if you come by public transport.
FOOD
There is a bar on campus, which will be open by arrangement if there are sufficient numbers, as veterinary students will be the only students on campus at that time. There is also a bistro, which opens at 10.00am in the morning and is open for lunch but closed for dinner at this time.
Due to the fact that the bar is only opened by arrangement students from past years highly recommend that you take snack foods and drinks with you and possibly your lunches as Orange Agriculture College is out of town and there are no other facilities close by to buy food from.
CLOTHING
During the course students will be swimming horses so you will need swimmers or suitable shorts and shirt. Students are advised that what you choose to swim in should allow you to swim freely i.e. board shorts down past the knee and huge loose shirts are not advised. Students should be suitably attired.
The NSW Veterinary Association will host a BBQ each week on campus, so you will need at least one good change of clothes.
Students must wear safe work boots while at the horse demonstration unit. You also need suitable boots for riding, ie no grip on the sole (smooth soled leather boots). No horses are to be ridden without an approved safety helmet, which the College staff can supply if necessary. If you own your own helmet, it is advised that you bring it with you.
