The more that you read, the more things you will know, The more that you learn, the more places you will go. --Dr. Suess
To the students:
“Summer Reading” is not only one of the most venerable of high-school traditions, but also one of life’s great pleasures. If you don’t believe me about the first, just check out all the “SUMMER READING” displays down at the local Barnes and Noble. If you don’t believe me about the second, just check out how happy all the English teachers are.
Sitting by the pool or at the beach with a good book. Does it get much better than that?
This time around, we as the English faculty have again done our best to choose books in the spirit of summer reading. We’ve expanded the choices, and we’ve done what we can to pick novels you’ll find exciting and engaging. As before, some are old, some are new, some classic, some contemporary.
Additionally, each book was chosen specifically to help you get the most of your upcoming semester. To that end, you can expect an assessment relating to one or both books within the first week of school.
Please find your summer reading assignment in the folder that corresponds to the grade you will be in this coming fall.
So as not to leave with that, I’ll leave you with the words of the great thriller writer, Stephen King. “Books are a uniquely potable magic.”
Enjoy the magic this summer.
Best,
The Upper School English Faculty
