COURSE COURSE DESCRIPTION Principles of Students explore the concepts of human medicine and research processes and Biomedical bioinformatics. Hands-on projects enable students to investigate the human body Science systems and various health conditions. (PLTW) Medical Medical Terminology introduces the structure of medical terms, including prefixes, Terminology suffixes, word roots, combining forms, singular and plural forms plus medical abbreviations and acronyms. Students achieve comprehension of medical vocabulary appropriate to medical procedures, human anatomy and physiology and pathophysiology. Course is recommended for all upper level Health Science students. Human Body Students examine the processes, structures and interactions of the human body Systems systems to learn how they work together to maintain homeostasis (internal (PLTW) balance) and good health. Medical Students explore the microbial world, studying topics such as pathogenic and non- Microbiology pathogenic microorganisms, laboratory procedures, identifying microorganisms, drug resistant organisms and emerging diseases. Students must pass safety test with 100% mastery. Anatomy & In Anatomy and Physiology, students conduct laboratory and field investigations, Physiology use scientific methods during investigations and make informed decisions using critical thinking and scientific problem solving. Students study a variety of topics, including the structure and function of the human body and the interaction of body systems for maintaining homeostasis. Medical This course is a “how-to” manual for maintaining overall health and homeostasis in Interventions the body as students explore: how to prevent and fight infection; how to screen (PLTW) and evaluate the code in human DNA; how to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer; and the prevalence of organ failure. Health Science Health Science Theory provides advanced knowledge and skills related to a wide Theory variety of health careers. Students employ hands-on experiences for continued knowledge and skill development. This course is taught through clinical rotations and career preparation. Students must pass safety test with 100% mastery. Health Science Taken concurrently with Health Science Theory, the Health Science Clinical course Clinical provides advanced knowledge and skills related to a wide variety of health careers. Students participate in extended learning experiences in a clinical setting that provides time to master the content of both courses. Biomedical Students apply knowledge and skills to answer questions or solve problems Innovation related to the biomedical sciences. Students design solutions for the health (PLTW) challenges of the twenty-first century as they work through challenging open– ended problems, addressing topics such as clinical medicine, physiology, biomedical engineering and public health. Practicum and Practicum and Extended Practicum courses in Health Science give students Extended practical application of previously studied knowledge and skills. They are paid or Practicum in unpaid capstone experiences for students participating in a coherent sequence of Health Science career and technical education courses in the Health Science Career Cluster. DC Practicum experiences occur in a variety of locations appropriate to the nature and level of experience. Clinical rotations align to specific specialty areas in: Dental Assisting, Pharmacy Technician, Certified Nursing Assistant, Phlebotomy and Emergency Medical Technician – Basic.
