Classroom Notes for Room 30 Week of September 6 through September 9, 2016 Tuesday is Day #4 of our five-day specials schedule.

Body Safety Parent Meeting- A parent information meeting our body safety program will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 7th at 7:00. Students will take part in the program on November 14th.

Heartland Film Festival Letter Project- Tuesday we will meeting with retired MGES Kindergarten teacher, Jan Taylor. She will talk to the 4th grade classes about writing letters to welcome novice movie makers that will be coming to Indianapolis in October for the (Truly Moving Pictures) Heartland Film Festival. She helps to prepare gift bags to welcome the guests to Indiana. (No Tiffany jewels in the Gift Bags in Indiana!) The letters our students write are often a BIG hit with the participants.

Math- (pp. 107-129) -Lesson 3.3: The Distributive Property -Lesson 3.4: Mental math Strategies for Multiplication -Lesson 3.5: Arrays and Partial Products -Lesson 3.6: Use Partial Products to Multiply by 1-Digit Numbers

Spelling- Short Week List- ALL groups doing Homophones- Syllables and Affixes Level, Sort #54 Group I, II, and III: Syllable and Affixes #54 (SA #27) cellar-seller, allowed-aloud, bored-board, whether- weather, flower-flour, vary-very, desert-dessert, chews-choose, there-their, principle-principal, merry-marry, higher-hire.

Reading- Novel: Trouble River by Betsy Byars -Assign Book Talks (Due September 9, 2016) Not so sure about this deadline. It looks doubtful. Several students have not completed a book since the school year began. -Students will read pp. 22-42 -Review Target Skill: Story Elements -Target Skill: Prediction

Language- Units of Study Writing -Feeling and Drafting the Heart of Your Story -Studying Published Text to Write Leads -Orienting Readers with Setting

Science- -Review What are the motions of the oceans? Old Red Harcourt book pp. D38-D45 -Review What are the layers of the Earth? Old Red Harcourt book pp. C4-C11 -Review What causes earthquakes? Old Red Harcourt book pp. C12-C17 -How Do Volcanoes Form? Old Red Harcourt book pp. C18-C25 -Erosion and Deposition- Discovery Education Tech Book pp. 27-30 -Landforms Study Guide

I suggest keeping the graded papers that come home with Social Studies and Science chapters. They are a good resource to use with a study guide the students will have at the end of the unit. Practicing the vocabulary from the beginning of the unit is a great use of study time.
