Establishing and Keeping Good Credit There are few things as important in the world of personal finance as keeping and maintaining a good credit rating. You never know when you may need it -- whether it’s borrowing money for an emergency, or for that “golden opportunity” that presents itself, or to obtain a job or even rent an apartment. In all these instances, and others, your credit history is your ticket to success or your downfall. If you have credit outstanding, it’s important to keep it in good shape. Make your payments on time. Don’t use credit to excess, and don’t “pyramid” your debt -- that is take on a new credit card to pay off the balance on an old one, only to rebuild the balance on the old one again. Periodically review your credit report for any errors, and report those errors to the agency that holds your report. Credit reports can be obtained for free or at low cost from any of the three major reporting companies: Equifax, Trans Union and Experian. If you are trying to build credit, your credit union is an excellent place to start. You might begin with a secured credit card, a credit card that is “backed” by money set aside in a savings account. You might also ask a friend or family member with established credit to co-sign a small loan for you. In both these instances, favorable information is placed on your credit report provided payments are made on time.
