Title of Lesson: Endangered Species Research Project Date: 8/10/10 Timeframe of Lesson: 2 ½ weeks Author(s): Brian Kimmel School District: Wauwatosa School District Campus: Underwood Elementary Subject Area(s): Writing Grade Level(s)/Course: 5th Grade Subject Specific: Writing State Standards 5.2. Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly. http://www.dpi.state.wi.us/dp 5.4. Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. i/standards/ 5.5. With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach. 5.6. With some guidance and support from adults, use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others; demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of two pages in a single sitting.

Stated Objective(s) Include Focused Instructional Strategy: Summarizing and Note taking the focused Instructional Strategy – see chart on page Objectives: - Students will effectively research an endangered species while using a 13. variety of resources, including the internet. - Students will present their findings to the class in the form of a PowerPoint presentation and written paper.

Procedures for Lesson 1. The students will be given a list of endangered species to choose from. 2. The students will then be given an outline of the project, rubric, and a paper copy of a research organizer outline. 3. Then, the teacher will demonstrate how to use Kidspiration as another form of graphic organizer. 4. After that the students will research their animal using the internet as well as any other sources they choose. 5. The students will complete their Kidspiration organizer and written organizer outline. 6. After teacher approval the students will then word process their outline into a written paper. 7. Finally, the students will create a PowerPoint slideshow to present their findings to their classmates.

Assessment or Evaluation Informal assessment of students’ completion of their organizers. Formal assessment of their completed word processed paper. Formal assessment of their PowerPoint and presentation.

Enrichment Students who finish early can create a post-PowerPoint quiz to give to their classmates. Students who finish early could also add animations and effects to their PowerPoint slideshow.

Materials List of endangered species, outline of project w/rubric, research organizer outline, computer (w/internet access, Kidspiration, and PowerPoint)

Technology Resources: Kidspiration, PowerPoint, classroom set of Computers, Printer, Overhead projector
