HAN Intro 2017

Table of contents

Introduction First of all: it’s great that you want to help out with the HAN Intro by being a mentor! This booklet provides important information that will come in handy for you in that role.

It answers questions like: Are students allowed to use alcohol or drugs? And if so, how much? What should I do in case of a medical emergency? What should I do in difficult situations?

As a mentor, you will guide your mentor group through the entire HAN Intro, from the intro market to the intro party. You will help your ‘pupils’ become thoroughly prepared for their studies at HAN.

We hope you have a great summer holiday so you will be rested when you start the HAN Intro.

On behalf of the Nijmegen Intro organisation HAN Marketing, Communication and Public Relations Mandy van de Louw Myrthe Bouwkamp Picking up wristbands, T-shirts and posters In the week of or before the HAN Intro we will inform your course department about how and when the wristbands and T- shirts will be distributed. This year we have red wristbands for students under 18 and green ones for students over 18. Students are required to wear a wristband, which gives them free access to all activities. HAN Intro Programme The HAN Intro will be held on Thursday 31st of August, after the introductions for the different degree courses. The HAN Intro is a HAN-wide event that introduces all first-year students to HAN University of Applied Sciences, their fellow students and the city of Nijmegen.

As the mentor, it can be helpful for you to agree on a meeting time and place with your mentor group while you are together during the degree course introduction.

HAN Intro Code of Conduct! The general codes of conduct that apply to everyday life also apply during the HAN Intro, which means the following:

 Drink in moderation  The use and sale of drugs is prohibited  Hands off each other's belongings  Hands off each other (unless mutually consensual)  Keep things neat and tidy and clean up your own mess  Abide by the law  Accept everyone as they are and respect each other's differences  Be reachable: for example, save ICE (in case of emergency) numbers in your mobile phone Alcohol during the HAN Intro  No alcohol may be served on campus before 13:00 during the introduction week.  None of the alcoholic beverages sold in the cafés may be cheaper than the soft drinks.

HAN house rules for alcohol consumption

1. No alcohol will be served to students under the age of 18 during the HAN Intro. No distinction is made between drinks with high or low alcohol levels.

2. All students are required to wear a HAN wristband during the HAN Intro. Coloured wristbands are handed out to students so you can clearly tell which students are above and under the age of 18. These wristbands are valid during the HAN-wide activities and the separate degree course activities so it is clear at all times who can and cannot drink. The three categories are: mentors, <18 years and >18 years.

3. Everyone must provide proof of identity when they pick up their wristband.

4. Course departments are responsible for enforcing the protocol with regard to responsible drinking during the HAN Intro. The mentors are the ambassadors of their course departments and have been informed about the protocol and house rules for the HAN Intro. They will alert students if they are using alcohol irresponsibly during the HAN Intro.

5. If anyone above the age of 18 is caught buying alcoholic drinks at the bar and passing them to others under 18, both parties will be held responsible. We want to discourage this form of supply of alcohol to minors. 6. No alcohol will be served to supervisors while they are on duty or to persons serving as designated drivers for others.

7. Failure to comply with the house rules during the HAN Intro from 28 August – 1 September will result in the course department of the person in question being informed. That person may also be denied further participation in the HAN Intro.

Alcohol and harassment hotline If at any time during the HAN Intro you witness alcohol abuse and/or harassment, you can report it anonymously to the alcohol and/or harassment hotline. A hotline has been set up to allow students and mentors to make an anonymous report in the case of alcohol abuse or harassment during the HAN Intro. You can access the hotline by clicking a button on the www.hanintro.nl mobile website. Use the short online report form to describe what happened.

If you do not need to remain anonymous, you can send an e- mail to [email protected] or a message to the HAN Intro organisation. If you need immediate assistance during the HAN Intro, please call 06 55434168 (Arnhem) or 06 55291340 (Nijmegen). Clearly state what has happened, who is involved, and when and where the incident occurred.

Each report will be handled and investigated by the HAN Intro organisation. Responsible drinking tips for mentors  Set a good example by not drinking or by drinking responsibly.  Agree with your fellow mentors that you will order soft drinks for the first round.  Make sure you study both the general rules and the rules for alcohol before the start of the intro.  Agree with your group to watch out for each other, so you all get home safely.  Agree that you will not drink excessively on the active intro days.  Know when you think a person has had too much to drink, set that as a limit and speak out if someone has reached that limit.  Point out to everyone that they are responsible for the introduction succeeding without any alcohol-related incidents.

Difficult situations A number of difficult situations may occur during the HAN Intro. These are described below, along with possible solutions. We consider these to be the most important:

 A fight between two introduction participants Separate the two, take them away from the group, and find out what the problem is. Look for a solution together.

 People who live in the city and are acting like know-it-alls Take the person aside and explain that the Intro is for everyone and you want to show the participants as much as possible (and as broad a programme as possible). Ask the person to offer suggestions instead of criticism.

 One of the introduction participants has difficulty fitting in with the group. Try to involve this person in the activities as much as possible. Try to find out what the underlying problem is.

 An introduction participant has had too much to drink. Have one mentor stay with the group while the other accompanies the drunken person (back to the sleeping quarters or to a quiet place). Make sure he/she drinks enough water.

 An introduction participant has disappeared and is not answering their phone. Contact the HAN Intro organisation. Leave a message on the person’s voicemail. If the person reappears, explain that he/she should stay with the group or let someone know where he/she is going. What should I do in case of emergency? Always put your own safety first!

Accident / heart failure / unconsciousness: first call 112 1. Immediately contact the emergency service by phone at 112.  Calmly and clearly describe what has happened.  Tell them exactly where you are.  Tell them what you think you need. (first aid / CPR assistance / ambulance).  Tell the operator what you have done.
