NCTE REGIONS 2, 4, 5, 6 AFFILIATE LEADERSHIP MEETING #ncteaffiliate St. Louis, Missouri — JULY 8–10, 2016 Agenda

For these days together we, as a community of affiliate and NCTE leaders, will  tell stories of what our affiliates have been, of how we perceive our affiliates now, and of what we’d like our affiliates to be.  work together to find ways we can better represent our affiliates to the world (think brand) by showcasing our members’ stories in their own voices and working in partnership with NCTE to better support the educators we serve.  develop our own toolkit of resources that we can share, add to, and use.

(stickies & popcorn)  “NCTE & Affiliates – Moving Forward Together, Starting with Questions” — Emily Kirkpatrick 9:15–10:00 a.m. — “Empowerment: Dismantling and Rebuilding--Recapturing Our Voices, Our Agency, Our Mission” — Jocelyn Chadwick, NCTE Vice President.

11:00–11:30 a.m. — Let’s change the world of our members and would-be members. What do we as educators want and need? How do we translate this to our members and prospective members? What do they want and need from us?  Getting personal—ourselves, ourselves as teachers – writing, talking, sharing

11:45 a.m.–12:45 p.m. — Lunch — Lambert CD 1:00–2:15 p.m.  A Reading — Marge Ford  We’ll use what we know about ourselves as teachers to discover o What are the needs and wants of our members and would-be members to help their students succeed? o How does our affiliate’s work embrace them and their stories? o How does our brand become something they hold dear and our work something they pass on by word of mouth? o How do we work with NCTE on this?  Let’s put our affiliate hats on, look back to the questions above, use the: What, So what, Now what? Protocol (http://www.nsrfharmony.org/system/files/protocols/what_so_what_0.pdf ), and figure out o What does my affiliate have to do to help our members attain #1? o How does our affiliate attain #2? o What do we need to do for #3 to come about? o What are suggestions for #4? o As an affiliate organization what is in-and-out of my control?  Let’s create: ideas/ tools/resource kits to address the ideas we identified.

8:30–9:15 a.m. —Incorporating These Ideas into Conversations and Actions to Take To Our Boards  A Reading — Dixie Keyes  Review and reflect on what we’ve learned so far  What do we want to take back to our boards from what we’ve learned this weekend?  How do I talk about this when I go back? How do I translate this weekend into energy and excitement for them?

 Practicing with the “Engaging Skeptics” exercise.

9:15–10:00a.m. – On the Cover  Affiliates create a front page and list of contents of how they envision their group looking in 3-5 years.
