Course Offerings Advanced PE – Team Sports, Gymnastics and Self Defense Core 9 PE – Individual and Dual Sports Core 9 Competitive Athletics – Individual and Dual Sports Competitive Athletic Weight Training – Available to any sophomore, junior or senior involved in interscholastic sports at Tracy High School. Prior approval for course must be obtained. Adapted PE – This program provides individualized activities to meet each student’s needs, giving special attention to those with limitations, and protects students with disabilities. Weight Training – This course is open to juniors and seniors with prior approval from an instructor and a grade of “C” or better in Core 9 PE. Aerobics – This course is open to juniors, and seniors with prior approval from an instructor and a grade of “C” or better in Core 9 PE. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

-20 credits in Physical Education (Must pass two years to graduate) -Physical Education is required in the 9th and 10th grades. -Students are encouraged to enroll in physical education beyond the requirement of 20 credits.

CLASS PROCEDURES

1. Students are to be in the locker room when the tardy bell rings. 2. Students who are not in the locker room prior to the tardy bell will not be allowed to dress for the day. 3. Five minutes after the tardy bell, students are to report to the class assigned area for roll. 4. At roll call students must be properly dressed and sitting in their proper location with all re-admits and excuses (passes). 5. Any time a student is late, they should dress properly and report to the teacher with their re-admit if needed. 6. After the teacher dismisses the class to shower and dress and the students have completed dressing, they must remain in the front of the locker room behind the painted yellow line.

All school policies (available in student handbook) regarding attendance and tardies will be enforced by the PE Department. Cell Phone Policy- Cell Phone use is not allowed in the locker room or in class. Cell phones seen out during these times will be confiscated and turned into the Asst. Principal’s Office.

STUDENT EXPECTATONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Students should have an individual locker and are expected not to share with a classmate. 2. To attend class in the properly labeled clothing (name on shorts and shirt) for the prescribed activity. 3. No hats, sunglasses, gum, food, or drinks in any physical education classes. Water is permitted during class. 4. No student is allowed in a facility that is unsupervised. (Such action could result in injury and/or discipline.) 5. To be sure locks and lockers are secure. 6. To keep the physical education areas clean and respect all facilities. Damage to facilities and equipment will be assessed to the student. 7. To obtain prior permission before missing class for school related business. 8. To take care of all restroom needs before reporting to roll call.

*** The Lockers in P.E. classes are for your convenience, but are school property, and the administration reserves the right to inspect the contents of your locker. THE SCHOOL CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ITEMS LOST OR TAKEN FROM YOUR LOCKERS, SO PLEASE DO NOT SHARE LOCKERS OR COMBINATIONS. BEHAVIOR STEPS AND CONSEQUENCES

1ST OFFENSE – Student/ Teacher conference (may result in a loss of all or a portion of daily participation points) 2ND OFFENSE - Non-participation for the school day 3RD OFFENSE- Parent contact and referral to assistant principal and/or detention. *** Excessive disruption or behavior may result in an immediate referral.

TARDY POLICY 1st Offense – Warning to the student by teacher 2nd Offense- Second warning and parent contact 3rd Offense – Loss of participation points for the day/parent contact 4th Offense- 15 minute after school detention 5th Offense – Referral to AP office

CLOTHING

Students are required to dress appropriately for physical education every day. If there are special circumstances they may be discussed with the student’s teacher privately.

Clothing should be intact and free from rips and tears. No extra writing other than name will be allowed on your uniform. PE clothing must be appropriately marked by placing the student’s last name and first letter of their first name on the front of the T-shirt and the left leg of the shorts. Any students not wearing his/her own, marked clothes will receive a non-dress. They are no-undershirts allowed beneath the PE uniform. This will also result in a non-dress.

1. Shoes – Tennis, any color 2. Socks – Recommended 3. Shorts – Green, gray or gold athletic shorts 4. Shirts – Gray T-shirt 5. Sweats- Green, gray or gold cotton sweats.

During cold weather, sweats and sweatshirts may be worn, but because of restricted movement and safety, no bulky jackets may be worn. P.E. T-shirts must be worn under sweatshirts. PE clothing will be kept clean and washed at least once a week.

GRADING SYSTEM

Physical Education grades will be determined from the following guidelines: The students will be graded on a points system per day. Each day will be worth 5 points. The number of days per quarter varies but usually there are 40+ days per quarter.

As an example, within each quarter their point totals could include: 200 points for participation 40 points for written work 20 points for skill improvement 260 points. Total points possible for a quarter.

CORE 9 PE WILL INCLUDE A 10% FITNESS GRADE AND A 10% PORTFOLIO GRADE FOR THE 1st SEMESTER. and a 10% FITNESS GRADE AND A 10% COMPREHENSIVE FINAL GRADE FOR THE 2nd SEMESTER.

Participation – This area includes involvement in activities, cooperation with teachers and students, sportsmanship, and respect and compliance for all rules. The number of points earned for each unit will determine participation grades. Skills – This area deals with teacher observation of skills performed, skill tests given, and improvement during each unit. Written Work – This area deals with written assignments to be done as homework as assigned by the teacher. The second part of this area is a written test covering the content of the class activity such as rules, history, skill techniques, strategy and general information concerning each class. All Core 9 Students will be required to complete a Portfolio assignment which will be graded at different times throughout the year.

It is the discretion of each individual instructor to distribute the points or weight each unit. Students may lose a portion of their daily participation points if the teacher deems it necessary. TRACY JOINT UNION HIGH SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION HANDBOOK PAGE 3

LOWERING OF A STUDENTS GRADE:

-Any combination of 6 absences or medicals not made up will lower a student’s grade one letter grade. On excused absences or medicals numbers 8, 10 and 12 that are not made up it will result in an additional grade lowering. -6 tardies not made up will lower a student’s grade one letter grade. Each subsequent tardy will result in an additional grade lower. (A tardy is arriving within ten minutes of tardy bell.) -3 incidents of non-participation, non-dress, unexcused absences and/or suspension will lower a student’s grade one letter grade. (I.e., if a student’s grade is an A but the student has 3 non-dresses, their grade will now be a B.) The student will also be sent to the assistant principal on their 6th non- dress/non-participation. Each subsequent non-dress, non-participation, unexcused absence or suspension will result in an additional grade lower. (I.e., if a student has an A but the student has 3 non- dresses and an unexcused absence, their grade will now be C). Any combination of 6 non-dress, non participation, unexcused absence or suspension will result in an F for the quarter. No late work will be accepted. Students will not be allowed to make up suspensions.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION MAKE UP: Students may make up participation credit for excused absences and medicals only. by scheduling make up activity with their physical education instructor within a reasonable time or they may attend after-school PE make ups which are offered the last week of every unit. Non-dresses, non-participations, unexcused absences and suspensions may not be made up. It is the student’s responsibility to complete make up work.

Grading Scale

90% - 100% A 80% - 89% B 70% - 79% C 60% - 69% D 59% or below F

* GRADES ARE AVAILABLE BY REQUEST. Parent Link will be updated quarterly at minimum. * PROGRESS REPORTS: if a student has 4 or more marks at progress report time (i.e., 1 day illness, 2 non- dresses, 1 non participation), they will receive an “F” and In Danger of Failing.

MEDICAL EXCUSES

Students may be excused from participation for the following:

1. Parent Note - A note from a parent as a medical excuse is valid for a maximum of 5 consecutive days. The note should be given to the physical education teacher. This is considered an excused absence and may be made up. 2. Physician Note – A note from a physician excuses a student from participating as prescribed by the doctor. This note must be given to the teacher who will instruct the student in what will be expected of him/her during the time of the medical excuse. Physicians note should be specific to students’ physical limitations. Physician note for 6 weeks or longer – any student with a six-week or longer will be referred to their counselor for removal from class. If students are not removed there is a possibility of failure to lack of participation.

During our swim units, female students will be given three consecutive days for their menstrual cycle. These days will not require any make-up. Any days taken beyond the three days will require PE make-ups. Students with chlorine allergies are required to bring a physician’s note at the beginning of the year.

Students with medical excuses are to attend roll and dress in physical education clothes unless a doctor specifies differently. Students will be expected to make up class work missed due to medical excuses in order to receive participation credit.

TA’s Expectations Teacher’s Assistants will report to their gender appropriate side and check in with a teacher before the bell rings. They will assist their teachers with various duties including but not limited to: student locker assistance ,equipment set-up/take down, and running various errands. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION

1. Any injury sustained, regardless of how minor, is to be reported immediately to the instructor. 2. Do not bring large amounts of money or valuables to physical education classes. 3. Teachers’ aides are an important part of the physical education program and should be treated accordingly. Students are expected to cooperate with aides at all times.

Dear Parents and Students, In our ongoing effort to relate better to medical conditions of our students, we as a staff feel that it is necessary to have our students list any medical conditions that may limit their participation in our program. This information will be completely confidential. We have a growing number of medical conditions and as a staff we want to be as sympathetic as possible while holding our students to the highest individual standards. Please list any medical conditions that you feel will effect your son or daughters participation in the physical education program (please be sure to include any asthmatic conditions and limitations). Also, feel free to contact any member of our staff to discuss any concerns.
