Words, Words, & More Words (Antonyms, Homographs, Homonyms, & Synonyms – Prefixes & Suffixes)

Antonyms - These are words that are “opposites” in meaning  Examples: “up” & “down” - “top” & “bottom”

Homographs – These are words that have three (3) traits to remember: 1. Same Spelling 2. Different Pronunciations (sounds) 3. Different Meanings  Examples: “read” – present tense of “reading” “read” – past tense of “reading

“live” – “I live in Spokane.” “live” - “The band will play live at 6pm.”

Homonym (also called “Homophone”) – These are words that have three (3) traits to remember: 1. Same Pronunciations (sounds) 2. Different Spelling 3. Different Meaning  Examples: “to” & “two” & “too” – “there” & “their”

Synonyms – These are words that are similar/same in meaning/definition  Examples: “large” & “huge” – “same” & “similar” & “alike”

Prefixes - These are the beginning attachments to a main stem or word  Examples: “co”, “dis”, “en”, “im”, “multi”, “non”, “tri”, “un”…there are many, many more (see a dictionary or website)

Suffixes – These are the attachments to the end of a stem or word  Examples: “-s”, “-es”, “-ed”, “-en”, “-ing”, “-ism”, “-ly”, “-tion”… there are many, many more (see a dictionary or website)
