5.4 Community Family Support Project
Community Family Support Project are undergoing changes in staff with Kerry McKenzie the Health and Early Years Worker leaving. She said goodbye to the Tuesday evening Healthy Family Group in Elders court and is now focusing her last few weeks on a short term Food Initiative in Lochee Library. Interested parties have been drawn from our recent free Magic Show for Lochee families in the library where 21 kids and 13 parents attended and had lots of fun.
Great news for our Lochee Laughter Club as they received a Bronze medal in a local competition for their efforts to plant and tend a "tattie patch".
What a great resource we have for the local under 12's and their parents in the form of this club and of course a huge thanks to the Housing Department Sheltered Lounge for the free premises and friendly Warden support. These partnerships are really what make a difference to Lochee families’ lives.
5.5 Lochee Pathfinder
Summer Family Fun and Food
Parents/carers were more interactive in organising games and activities for their children to participate in this time around. A few parents decided that they wanted to try and raise some money for a trip away in the October Holidays so came up with the idea of a tombola stall. Over the summer programme new toys, books, games etc. were brought in and raffle tickets sold at 20p each or £1 a strip. Over £200 was raised and a few parents are now keen to fundraise further by organising a bingo night or disco.
With less than 6 weeks until the October Holidays, planning has started towards holding the next Family, Fun and Food.
4 Menzieshill Play Trail
Dundee Partnership funding has been secured through the Lochee Regeneration Forum to provide a play trail in Menzieshill, based on safe and fun walking routes to the new Primary School. Additional funding was secured from Inspiring Scotland and this has enabled two 8 hour Play Rangers Posts to be advertised and filled for the Play Trail working collaboratively with Aberlour Childcare Trust. There will be an 8 hour post solely for the Menzieshill Play Trail and also a 23 hour post working between both Aberlour and the Play Trail. It is hoped the Play Ranger Free Play Sessions will begin in September. The funding runs until March 2016.
Dundee University Pathfinder Evaluation
Dr Sharon Jackson is Senior Lecturer in Social Work (Children and Families) and has been evaluating the work of the Lochee Pathfinder over the last few months. Sharon has been attending some of the Pathfinder activities and programmes primarily to allow her to observe and to allow an opportunity to speak to children, parents, staff and other agencies who attend the Lochee Pathfinder provision. Parents talk about having been able to build trusting relationships with staff who have helped them when they have asked for assistance and connect them with other forms of support where needed. In discussing the summer programme in particular and other forms of provision many of the parents have talked about the importance of being able to ‘do things’ with their children. Unsurprisingly, the expense of leisure and cultural activities can prevent many of the attending parents from being able to do things together as a family.
The report will concentrate on looking at what difference the Pathfinder has made and how it has been achieved to date. The report is in only in draft at present but will be circulated once complete.
Families that attended Family Splash at St Pauls High school were filmed as part of the Pathfinder evaluation. Families had given permission beforehand to be part of the video footage about their experiences of The Pathfinder.
Family Splash at St Pauls
Family Splash family fun sessions were held on a Friday afternoon over the Summer Holiday from 2-3pm. Due to the current closure of Lochee Leisure Centre the Lochee Pathfinder offered families transport to and from St Pauls High School Pool. Families took the opportunity to have fun in the pool over the summer. After swim sessions included a snack for everyone and different workers and agencies were involved in providing activities for the families.
