PDS Coordinating Council Meeting With

Frostburg State University PDS Coordinating Council Meeting with Frederick County and Washington County Wednesday October 19, 2016 1:30-2:30pm USMH- Room 433

Welcome/Introductions:  Toby Eirich welcomed everyone and introduced Jodi Welsch and Vonnie Belt the new MAT-E program coordinator.

Washington County Updates:  Jamie Hade- they continue to roll out the 1:1 iPad initiative for grades 3-12.  Interns now have access to the employee portal.  They have been meeting monthly with interns to go over the Danielson model led by Courtney Leard from Fountaindale Elementary.  At the meetings they also share ideas and information. A few outcomes from the meetings: interns now have badges for access to their building and making copies.

Frederick County Updates:  Toby asked if there was anything new in Frederick County. Janet Dill said at Wolfsville Elementary they now have a 1:1 ratio for all students and there is now a “problem solving” grade on the student’s report cards.

Data Review:  Jodi Welsch handed out a summary sheet with information regarding the PreK-9 programs data sharing from fall 2016.  Students were weak in critical thinking and reflection and also with how they promote it to their students. They also had difficulty with adapting for diverse students in their classroom.  She said that the PDS attendees were serving as an “advisory” council for FSU and opened up the discussion to all for their suggestions and observations.  Jessie Orth said that he saw a nice cross-section on the summary sheet of what they are seeing at Potomac Heights.  Jodi said she heard the same comment from Allegany and Garrett County.  Danae said she has participated in many interviews and noted that students did not have solid, good examples in the areas of differentiation and assessment.  Janet Dill felt like the Intern I and II students were more prepared with planning than the MAT students.  Vonnie Belt offered that this is the nature of the MAT program because of the condensed schedule and that it was something she is working on with them in their core classes.  Colleen Dunn told everyone that Suzanne O’Toole, a supervisor, was well prepared and had very specific instructions for the interns.  Casey Doggett said that it would be nice to see the interns spread around the county more and that it was good that some were in Title 1 schools. Those schools generally have more openings.

FSU Updates:  Toby reminded everyone to let him know if they want anything added to the meeting agendas.  If a student is having issues, please call or email him. FSU does not want substandard interns out in the field. They have been reminded about dress, behavior, etc.  Toby asked site coordinators if they still needed the extra ½ hour before the PDS meeting for artifacts.  Jodi added that the TPIP report is no longer needed but the SLO portion was important to FSU. Intern II students now use the Student Impact Study.  Toby asked for feedback regarding the mentor orientation meeting.  Janet suggested that using Myersville Elementary would be easier since it is easy to reach and teachers would not have to leave class early to get there.  Jamie Hade asked if any of the newer people needed anything such as handbooks. Tobi will email an electronic version to Jamie to forward.  Jodi clarified that there is one handbook for all education programs but there are addendums for P-9 and MAT-E.  Tobi said that they had all of the Hagerstown interns meet at the same time for orientation this year so they were better prepared. They then broke out into smaller groups according to their program. The interns told him that is was good to see the beginning of school during their induction days.  Colleen suggested that the hello visit for interns be earlier in the year.  Jodi said they are trying to have them visit at the end of May or beginning of June.  Toby added that the scheduling and placements with the counties was all done through his office. He noted that the site coordinators were doing an excellent job and he appreciates that he can contact Frederick coordinators for placement ideas.  He went over the site coordinator role: Point person to principal Welcoming interns and introducing them to staff, etc. School policy Artifacts- he will send information regarding artifacts to new people “Go to” person for interns Recruit mentors- please let him know if anyone is interested  Kristen Dolan asked if you had to participate in mentor orientation every year. Jamie said yes and they now need to apply to become a mentor in Washington County.  Vonnie went over the MAT-E calendar and made a few course updates. Please let her know if anyone is struggling.  Tobi announced that they were looking for a science and a school counselor instructor for the spring. If you have any names, please send them to him.  He thanked everyone for coming to the meeting.  Janet Dill asked about vouchers. Toby said that Vickie Mazer sent information to Linda Civetti
