He had many administrative positions at the Faculty, amongst which dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration. He studied quantitative economics at the University of Groningen and obtained his PhD degree from the University of Groningen on the aggregation of production functions. Joan was a visiting researcher at the University of Oslo, SUNY Buffalo (USA), the Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium) and the University of Newcastle (Australia). He is also Director of CofFEE-Europe (see http://www.fdewb.unimaas.nl/algec/coffee-europe).
